I need some more growl

Seriously: this thread proves that "growl" is an amazingly vague term. Yeah, the consensus is usually that P-basses thump and J-basses growl, but that's a misleading stereotype because there are many different P-bass tones, many different J-bass tones. You can get thump from a J, and growl from a P.

So, here's some friendly advice to anyone looking for a certain tone: GIVE US AN EXAMPLE. You could cite a particular song, album, or band -- or even better, post an audio link. There's a place called YouTube where you can find almost anything.

I haven't heard of a bass guitar sounding like a dog..good ol vernacular.

Growl = J bass, Stingray, or Spector with low action and bright strings played aggressively.

When I tink of jazz bass, I think scooped mids, which is opposite of growl ie. Midrange bark.

Geddy Lee has an awfully growly tone IMO

Certainly a vague term. I always associated some of the grind-est tones with a P bass such as:

John Wetton (King Crimson) skip to about 4:30
Starless& bible black - skip to about 4:30
Larks tongues in Aspic (Live)

For the OP, i've had really good results with a Joyo Ultimate drive, plus you can't argue with the price. Also try Roto 66 stainless strings plus a pick or hard attach with your fingers (a la Geddy)

Try a Digitech bass driver. it has settings from subtle tube grind, right up to full on fuzz. You can usually find em used for under $50

This pedal's SVT setting is surprisingly good. I owned one for a while and AB'd it with a VT Bass (v.2) and for someone looking for the SVT sound on a budget, the BD is hard to beat.

My VT is always on and combined with the Jazz, it provides all the growl I need.

I'm thinking a little overdrive or fuzz will further enhance my sound. Right now I've got a j copy and a Peavey TKO 115.

Might want a single pedal (fuzz or drive) or a multi unit.

So, what would you all recomend?

2nd the Beta Drive... its an always on pedal for me, gain all the way down and tone just about centered.
