I need some troubleshooting

Hello out there!! I just joined today! I have a problem I need help with. Any help would be great. The scoop:

I have a 2002 Gibson T-bird and a Fender U.S.A. J-Bass. I play through Ampeg SVT-350 and a BSE410HLF cab (also Ampeg). I love them all. I recently brought the T-bird in because I had problems with the tone knob. It crackles and snaps through the amp, especially when the tone knob is turned all the way down. And it usually doesn't change the tone either. When I brought it in, they couldn't find anything wrong. I need some troubleshooting ideas. If anyone can help, it would be much appreciated.

Also, I tend to play hard and hit the strings rather than pluck them (fingers, no picks). Does anyone know a good setting to minimize the snap sound from hitting bass strings hard? Thanks for time. Any assistance would be great.

Until then...
