I need suggestions for a preamp please

I'm a big fan of the Sansamp Para Driver. It makes a great
DI, as well as being a simple, versatile preamp.
It has a 4.7 megohm input for peizo pickups and old passive
Fenders. Runs a power amp just fine. And its CHEAP!!

I'll second that - I have a Sansamp RPM and it's very versitile. I think MF is stocking them again.

There seems to be very few preamps with tube overdrive capability. My IOD does it, so does the SVP-Pro (now discontinued). The BBE BMAX-T has a Drive control, but I have no info on how it works.

Played through HiFi speakers, the preamps at BassTasters do show some differences. The Ampeg preamps have a noticeable muffled characteristic when compare to the others. I don't know if they were recorded direct into the board, or mic'ed through speakers.

i would recommend finding a Aguilar DB659 over an SWR IOD, as i used to own an IOD as well as an SVP-Pro in the past. the IOD was good, but it seemed to lack a certain 'oomph' in the lower part of the frequency range, making me describe it as 'lean and mean' the SVP-Pro was thick and tubey. the DB659 had a great full tone, wasn't as tubey as the SVP-Pro and could get overdriven in the preamp stage nicely.

that's all i can offer in terms of personal experience. but i love my DB659, but its not cheap and it would be used to boot, so maybe not what youre looking for.

I also love my Sansamp PBSDR, but for stage use i think i might actually prefer the non programmable version because of teh way the knobs work. you need to move them back to the program's setting before you can change the program (kind of confusing to say), but i love the drive i get from it the type of grit i get is really hard for me to find anywhere else, and i've owned a bunch of nice drive pedals, and still have a fulltone bassdrive. but not having a mid knob can be annoying i'll admit. turning down the bass and treble results in a boost around 750hz. so a Para Driver might be a great alternative.

Steve, have you had a chance to check out your fellow North Dakotan's Acme Low-B2? If not I strongly recommend you do so before spending any money! I don't suggest Acmes for everyone but everything you've ever written tells me it will be the right choice. (And if you crease the cones I'll buy you some new ones myself - it ain't gonna happen!)

If you think the 115X is too big then I guarantee the Neox 212 will be too big.

Yeah, I know. I'm getting a little punchy these days. Not getting much sleep (Grace is having trouble) and I just don't know what to do about my rig situation. I don't want small for small sake. It needs to be able to cover gigs unsupported, but not be too big.

I have come to realize my PA support is really more of a "presence" through the system for the sake of an even sound than any real volume. I probably need to have more of a rig than I have thought in the past.

Not yet. I am trying to get in touch with him and see if we can arrange a meeting. Do you think the GB head would have enough juice? There are also a couple of those Peavy 1400X amps available right now on eBay.

Yes, it'll be as loud as your WT550/HT112 was but with more bottom. The 1400X will get every last dB out of the Acme but I don't think you tend to play in such loud environments.

Steve, I would drive over and grab that Genz rig TODAY, if it were me. I have a NeoX 112 and a 212. If I could only have one cabinet it would be the 212, hands down. It can handle bigger things no problem. And it's not heavy at all. 59 pounds. It's tall, so it isn't wide and can fit into any 4 door car easily. Edle lift handles, tilt back casters, etc. It's just a great cab. The geometry of the cab keeps it from feeling big and huge like a regular diagonal 212.

The 112 to me is great, but I find I that I'm rarely using it alone unless it's for something very, very small, like a little coffee house or restaraunt thing. The 212 just sounds much better to me at equal volumes. I think it's because one of the drivers is higher, plus the larger cab size means deeper lows.

I haven't played a GBE 600 anywhere but in a store, but it was great. I have a 1200 and a Neo-pak, and I use the Neo-pak 99% of the time because it's so light and sounds fantastic. Coupled with the carrying bag, it's a cinch to move around. I put my basses in a gig bag with double shoulder straps, clip the Neo-pak bag on to that with a big carabiner, and then push the 212 wherever I need to go. One trip, easy as pie.

There is a Neo-pak on ebay right now for around $500. Supposedly only has an hour or two of use on it.

It does look and handle like a smaller cab. Not a big footprint, the driver is up so you aren't just blowing at your knees, and it's fairly light.

It is tempting. I am trying to get my hands on a Low B2 to try as well. The GB is 12 pounds more, and a few inches here and there.

the New-Pak is tempting, but I like having the SS preamp option in the 600.

Whose the guy around here with the Acme cab??

And I don't know if this is what you're after, Steve, but I do know where there is an SVP-CL for sale, and an SVP-Pro for sale, both locally (not mine). I also have the both the BMax and BMax T preamps, which you're welcome to try out if you want, too, if you ever get down this way.

+1 For the SVP-Pro......I use this preamp right now and I believe what you are looking for can possibly be found in the SVP-PRO. I did not know that they were being discontinued, but I'm sure you can still find one availiable. Though it has a EQ, I always use me with the EQ defeated, and I use the basic Bass, Treble, and Mids to tweak the sound that I want. You can also get enhanced highs and lows as well as a brightness if you want. It also has overdrive if that is your thing. However, I'm an apple and oranges guy, so I'm not really into trying to tweak my stuff to death to get the perfect sound. However the EQ is good to use if you get in a venue that has funky acoustics.

I'm considering selling my SVP-PRO because I want to get new gear......if and when I decide to sell it, I'll post here on TalkBass before it goes to EBAY.

Brian Rustebakke. Not sure who he plays with these days. I haven't talked to him for a while.

Never been much of an AMpeg guy. The BBE is interesting. I think I'm probably better off with a head instead of a pre/power rig.
