I need tubes!

Alright, I was searching aroud again, and found some other toys.

Let me first ask you, how much drive is there to get with a tube preamp? I found an Ashdown ABM 500/210 for 550, as well as an Ampeg BA300; 250 for the 210 version and 350 for the 115. Are these any good?

Of course, there's also the cheapass MAG 300, but I don't think it'd get me the drive I'm looking for.

Thanks for your replies so far!

I owned 2 RPM-1 preamps, as far as I know the same as the pre section of an ABM. I seem to remember them being pretty versatile, capable of getting pretty "dirty" in a good way. My guitarist cranked the input gain and tube knobs, plugged into it, and proclaimed it great for blues guitar. I searched for some demo clips online but all I could find were slaphappy flurries of notes, too fast to get an idea of the tone. The old Basstasters site had a bunch of clips but those were all neutral sounding with no variation.

I don't know about new guitar amps, but I've practiced with an old Red Bear 120 that had plenty of low end. Better bass amp than guitar amp, it was a good guitar amp.
