I need tubes!

To be honest, I'm surprised you can't get that sound out of the PF500. Granted, it's not quite the quality of a tube preamp, but I have no problem getting some moderate grind out of my PF800. And this example of Dino cranking the gain on a PF500 sounds pretty good to me...I would back off it a little personally, but you can check it out starting at about 3:05:

As I said in my first post, I think my PF 500 is broken or something for it rips the preamp apart when turning up the gain. Maybe I'd be able to let someone fix it...

But if I understand correctly, you all advise against using the Marshall-soundalike in combination with the 115's?

I'm not advising you to forget about those London City amps at all. I don't think it sounded quite as good as the Orange did in that clip, but I think it has potential to sound very good if you play with the controls. I just figured your PF500 should be able to get you at least in the ballpark. If it's broken, that's one thing, but I was thinking maybe it wasn't and you just weren't digging the sound.

Alright, I was searching aroud again, and found some other toys.

Let me first ask you, how much drive is there to get with a tube preamp? I found an Ashdown ABM 500/210 for 550, as well as an Ampeg BA300; 250 for the 210 version and 350 for the 115. Are these any good?

Of course, there's also the cheapass MAG 300, but I don't think it'd get me the drive I'm looking for.

Thanks for your replies so far!

It depends on the design of the preamp. And also how hard you slam said tube.

I hear a lot of the Muff in there. Take a listen to the bass player from Capsula. She cops a tone pretty close to this with a Gibson Ripper and a Big Muff into a G-K setup or rented backline. It might be worth a shot to try the pedal and mess with the preamp settings on your existing rig. See if you can get close. Then you'll be able to hear if a tube amp will add that special something.

And how loud the output from your bass is.

Well I guess that's the same as how hard you slam your tube.

Yeah, I'm running a LPB-1 into the preamp to drive those tubes more.

Also, forget to mention this, but at the rehearsals for another band I'm using a Peavey JSX halfstack, a hundredwatts guitar amp. Put it on clean, gain all the way, LPB-1 into it, master all the way back to avoid blowing your face off; one of the most lovely tubesounds I've ever got.

But my question being here, would I get a decent sound with the tube preamp of the ABM or BA300?

Alright, been looking to new stuff for a change; another question for those willing to answer.

Reminding you of the JSX case, how I'd like the clean channel of that one; how would other amps compare? I've seen a Jet City 100H for €380, which is OVER MY BUDGET for a head (this means eating noodles for two weeks straight), how would that one compare to that JSX? I'd only be using the clean channel with a boost and drive (LPB-1 and Muff Overdrive), but would the low D still be able to get through like on the JSX?

That's really the most expensive I can go concerning new amps so please don't bother giving more expensive solutions, you'll only be giving me uncurable GAS and no-one wants that, right?

Thanks!
