I need your suggestions/advise!

Hi
I am struggling at the moment to get the exact sound I want for some of the songs we play in my band and would welcome your help! I play in an original metal band - metal as in Pantera/ not metal as in Metalica
My basses are Spector Legends (I love em) I have 4 & 5 string and my amp is a MoMarkBass and Barefaced Twin Cab
The problem I have is that I need to get a 'dirtier' sound for some of our songs and reduce the low end without killing it altogether.
I have maxed out the equaliser on the amp and have wasted money to several pedals I was told would do the trick, ie. Bass Overdrive/Compressor and put them back in their boxes as they haven't worked
I don't want to have a shed load of pedals - I'm a bassist when all said and done - but I do need something to give me that dirtier - grittier - evil sound when needed!
Any ideas
Ta muchly
Sue

Hey glad you finally posted! :D

Maxing out the eq is a horrible idea. You should stop trusting the person who told you that right now. :roflmao:

Also, pist this same question in the effects forum. Those guys are some of the most helpful weirdos you will ever come across.

All you need to do is post an example of a sound that is spot on or close to what you want. And then they'll tell you how to get there.

Agreed that you're better off asking this in Effects.

I found a Youtube video from 2008 where Rex Brown doesn't seem to be using much more than a compressor (an Ashdown bass dual-band comp). That's probably not responsible for grit, though he might be using it to push his gain at the front end of the amp. Equipboard is claiming various phasers and choruses, and an MXR Blowtorch, so you might look at those. Strings might also be a factor in his sound - maybe some very bright rounds.
