Actually I had never heard Mustang Sally played at the blues jams I've been going to and mostly know about it from this forum as a song lots of people get tired of playing. Well I didn't know it was a 24 bar blues song (or even that there were 24 bar blues songs) so that was the problem, as you can imagine. the singer kept staring at me and singled me through the changes, but once he started soloing I stupidly ( or automatically) went back to a 12 bar. I started getting so flustered I forgot to look for all the hot chicks that supposedly start dancing when ever Mustang Sally is played!! live and learn i guess haha!!

Yea thats one that I still havent learned to play and much like Volkswagons I will refuse to touch either one for as long as I can.
I have heard/played this tune for years at blues jams. There is even a blues jam here in town that has it on their "no play list", but I like the song and we usually do it kinda funky.
i played a block party this weekend & the old guys that hired us requested that the drummer & i act as their rhythm section & they wanted to do Mustang & i didn't know it was a 24 or whatever bar either. i even asked & the one guy said it's like a 16 bar blues. it wasn't but we got it. i really need to learn the real bassline.
About five years ago we were playing at a club and some drunk guy came up to the stage and requested Mustang Sally. We told him we didn't know it (we didn't), hoping he'd go away. He pulled out a C Note and said "do you know it now?" We immediately answered yes and circled the wagons. We played it E (it's in C I think), played in as a 12 bar riff and it packed the dance floor.
We never bothered to learn the real version and continue to pull out our bastardized version whenever the dance floor needs a jolt. Damn song works every time. Go figure.

Thanks, the funny part is I've handeled lots of crazy 12 bar variations thrown at me, like a stormy monday with a sharp 4, various stops, intro's, turnarounds etc, but something about the 24 vs 12 bar I just couldn't get my head around during the tune, and I kept going back to the 12 bar haha! I probly looked like a confused dog following a scent one way then the other and then going in circles! But yeah I posted this because I thought folks would get a laugh about it especially because of the tune in question!
Well I guess enlighten the rest of us. I can play a twelve bar in my sleep but never heard of a 24. I have never had the pleasure of mustang sally so what is the structure on a 24?

It seems you can play a blues scale up and down and still have MS Sally sound OK. Green Onions followed by MS Sally is a decent hand exercise for this old bastard.

It IS in a twelve-bar blues form. BUT... the changes are 'doubled' in length so as to complete the cycle every 24 measures.

The way I see it, if you haven't blown at least one well known song on stage you haven't been playing long enough. I've been playing for about 30 years and every now and then still draw a blank on a change or start of a tune I've played a hundred times.
It's just so long that no one likes to do that kinda jam unless u r a pure blues band I guess?

Doesn't that just make it a 12-bar blues with a double time feel? This is more of a nitpicky semantic question since I've never heard of anything called a 24-bar blues.
