I slapped...on a gig. I SLAPPED!!

Wow! You guys are amazing! I feel so happy now. Oh, and just for the record. During the same set, I used a pick on many songs.

Thankfully there were no "slap a da bass" jokes afterwards.

Also, I think my Lakland 4-94 actually liked being slapped around. It's almost as if it were saying, "yeah, c'mon, is that all ya got?" It'll probably be a while before this issue comes up again, but if it does I will approach it with reckless abandon.

I think my mind may be opening.

I can and really do appreciate a tasteful and well played slap groove played by itself or in the proper context of a song but, let's face it. Go on YouTube to listen to a review of a new bass that's hitting the market..... yep, crap-slapping. Want to listen to someone's new P Bass pickups? More crap-slapping. Go to your local music store to pick up a new set of strings? Well, you get the picture. What has all of this done for me? Made me appreciate the awesomeness of the great finger funk players...... something I aspire to be.

I slapped (& popped) at my gig last night. I know, I know, I've been vehemently opposed to using this technique for years unless it was absolutely necessary. But I can say with 100% certainty that is was 100% necessary, even required, to play this particular piece.

I didn't love it, but I didn't hate it. I was smart about it, even discreet. Didn't use too much treble, tried not to take peoples' heads off. I made it a point to keep the groove solid...and in the pocket. I think I pulled it off. It was only 1 song.

I hope this doesn't change things. I don't think it will.

I'm not fishing for support here. I'm just letting these feelings out. Maybe others can be inspired. I feel much better now. Thanks for listening.

I'm not opposed to it I don't do it just because I SUCK at it. No matter how much I practice, no matter how many yootoob tootorials I watch and practice to it's just the same results.

I get the overuse thing. Especially when you go into Guitar Center on a Saturday. But I like the technique and think it's appropriate at times and would love to be able to do it but I just can't seem to get it. My thumb seems to hit everything but the string I'd like it to hit. Unless I'm sitting in a chair and am motionless. But if I have to go between finger style and slap it's hopeless.

I'm guessing you're one of those guys I've seen hanging out on a street corner in a rain coat, stopping naive young people, asking "Hey, kid. D'ya' ever slap bass?..."

I've been looking for a demo of a Marcus Miller 5 string on youtube fingerfunk style... and man... Its like owners of this model seem to have a thumb erection and just thump away. I'd like to think I am decent with slapping but I'm starting to really hate the overuse.
