I think I committed a Talkbass sin,

I used to think I was a P and J guy. Turns out I'm a P and MM guy. Who knew.

I found out when I bought a cheap SUB Ray4 and fell in love with the sound but not the quality/ergonomics. Ended up upgrading. Sold a really sweet J to cover most of the cost of the upgrade. While I miss the J, I don't really miss it. It would be my last choice of a bass to gig with.

I say play what makes you happy and the band sound better...
BUT...
I actually had that problem on my P bass (ASH w/Rosewood neck, very muddy and no clarity to it. So I went through some pickups and found that when I put a SBP-1 into it, the bass said hey hear I am. Punch and clarity. But that was me.
(Go buy another Ray4 and see how you like it too. (for the price as another backup bass)

:laugh: big whup! your ray4 is probably a better ax, anyway.

i've mostly played FSOs (i like G&L a lot!), but i make no apologies for my ibby-style, modded PJs, or any other ax that doesn't conform to TB lemming-think. :D i have two P-basses: love them both (they're the best Ps ;) ) but they're definitely limited EBs compared to any other choice most of us could make.

the only sin you've committed is thinking that you've committed a sin --- which makes you "errant" or "wrong," but not sinful! you'll have to try a little harder to roll with the big boys! :laugh: :roflmao:

Play what works for you and ignore any dopes who tell you that your choice stinks. And especially ignore the worst of those dopes, who vehemently push their preferences and criticize yours while utilizing all the bravado that internet anonymity can provide.

I played one at our gigs for a couple of years until I bought a active EQ bass. (another sin) I did not like it but it sound was great. Sold it, then I bought a Sterling Ray4 for $269 new as a beater because the joint we played at was pretty rough.
(here comes the next sin)
I sold the p bass, playing the Ray 4 at every gig. Thought I would try a Fender Jazz. Bought from GC, sounded good at store, played at my gig friday night. Again, not the sound I like. During the break I swapped back to the ray4, guitar player looks at me & said " I like the sound of that one better" Jazz was used, so its going back to GC.
Anyone else been down this road?

Nope. Been using PBs exclusively for the last 45 years. That said, they aren't for everybody and they sure as heck aren't the only bass made in this world. I'm just glad you found a voice you like. Can't argue with the $269 for a usable bass either.

BTW, I was very concerned when I read your thread banner. I feared you gave up the bass to play a flute or something. Or worse yet, lead guitar...

Not bashing but there's your problem. Sounds good at the store. Something in you're signal chain or room acoustics is messing up the tone. Sounds like you are just going to keep shuffling basses for some time.

Rule #1: Guitarist opinions don't matter unless they own the PA.
Rule #2: The wife's opinion, see rule # 1.
Rule #3: Fire the drummer.

Yep, I feel the same way about Stingrays. They sound great as long as someone else is playing them. The moment I get one in my hands though, it's all wrong. They're just not my sound, and that's ok. I'm glad they're out there for the folks who like them.

If we all liked exactly the same things it would be a mighty dull world.

Yeah, actually kind of fun, I cant see how guys play the same kind of bass for 30 years. In the past 6 years I have bought and or sold 5. All different, one I have kept & played the longest is the Ray4!! I do have a nice 5 string I have owned for 22 years. I save it for when I get to play at church.
