I tried !

I got into effects through lock down, to add some fun & interest to playing solo at home. Spent countless hours watching demos, trying this pedal, that pedal. Then forever testing/tweaking sounds.....

Now got a sizeable board.

Could I have spent the time more fruitfully, working on pure technique & chops? Well yes, of course, but don't regret any of it. Helped me have fun on the instrument and learn fair bit on sound production and creativity.

Do I care if an audience can't distinguish certain fx? Nah, I get a kick out of them and love adding something extra/atmospheric to band mix.

Been using effects since I started playing bass in 1987. There's been A LOT of trial and error and it hasn't been cheap. It's far easier no-a-days with the Internet to get a handle on how effects work, but there's still a learning curve to get past.

the actual board is about ease of use.. if you have multiple pedals or just 2.. lots of ppl put them on top of their amp.. in hardcore cause of all the ppl on stage.. effects can be fun but if you don't need it you don't need it..

I am wondering why the no effect guys are in the pedals sub forum. I got to have an envelope filter. I did get an H90 and I do not really just keep it at home. I got the presets that Nate N started and I have about 3 curated versions of an envelope filter as well. and 4 octavers But when sketchy venue or festival outside situation, it stays at home

At the very least I bring at least a compressor and an envelope filter and pre The preamp I am using now a Source Audio ZIO DI and it has grit HPF and a useful baxandall EQ. 3 pedals all powered by A USB power bank - works well when subbing and the amp is shared or backline. I don't even have to look for wall power

Next-to-last gig, I had a compressor and a Carl Martin tube drive (mainly for "Substitute"). Last gig, just plugged into the head.

Also, just ordered an JHS Punchline. By and large, I just want my bass to sound like my bass, and I want to go through as few devices as possible.

I use signal processing mostly for my IEM sound. Bass => Cali76CB => VT v.2 => Noble => amp & FOH. It sounds absolutely great in my ears!
If it makes it to the FOH, that's cool, but honestly, I don't care. I just hope the sound tech makes the bass sound good in the house.

I do use a few FX from time to time as appropriate to fit certain pieces. Ususally either an envelope filter or a Octaver (+1 and -1).

If you don't like FX and don't find them useful, good for you.

I have a pretty extensive pedal board I built for guitar. It's fun to plug in bass from time to time and play around. However, the only pedal I have ever used for bass on a gig is a tuner. I have used 31-band rack EQ to facilitate doubling on upright bass, but I don't really consider that using effects.

If a song has effects on the original bass track, I wouldn't hesitate to use the same effect live...assuming I had the right pedal.

Here's a minor hit an with envelope filter on the bass. I doubt I will ever play this song live. If I did, I don't own an envelope filter and I think it would sound fine without.

My first effects I got when they were released back n da '70s.

Still have them and use them once in a while. They're pretty old now so I have a Zoom pedal that replicates them pretty good so that goes out on the gigs unless its something really special then they might come out.

:)

There was about a year when I didn't own an amp. I did go back, but I can tell you for a fact that you can become a better bassist without anything but a (mostly) in tune bass. Meh x1000. Sorry for putting a quarter into the troll food machine. I'm sure the pellets sound awful. Taste awful. Taste. Ya. Guess it's all about taste... unless you're here.

"List your top 3 unused effects..."

Or...I wish I had an effect that I don't have...

After an extensive experience with pedals from the Mu-Tron III that I bought (and not a reissue) that I couldn't tell you where it went or whatever happened to it. To the last eight years of many pedals over time and at one time, at times. Here is where I have landed and have the final pedal OTW...

The two preamps have simple unique functions from a HPF to the bi-amp clean/dirt XLR's with good cab sims and a blended 1/4" output to the HX One with a small midi controller. With or without an amp.

The last pedal is a VerTex Boost MKII with a buffered TRS insert (for running the mod/delay/reverb) into the amp effects loop and a truly transparent boost.

I never use more than one (1) effect at a time. The HX One offers enormous flexibility in access to VERY good sounding effects, is SIMPLE to operate and has other utilities like a noise gate and tuner.

At this point in the journey is where I step off the carousel of pedal dreams. The music that I like to get involved with has the space for textures, dynamic content and layers and solid clean and dirty Bass tone.

The electric Bass, processed well, sounds better than any Bass/Cable/Amp rig out there, but it can be done.

In my experience auditioning bass players or guitar players (depending on which I'm playing in a particular band), a brand-new-looking expensive instrument or a large pedalboard (or both) equals a potential red flag. Not definitive - sometimes the player turns out to be one who can play well and, more importantly, who listens and responds to what the other players are doing - but it bodes ill.

My current gig board is a wireless into an HX Stomp XL, direct into the board. That being said, most of the gig, my HX is running as an amp sim, without “effects”. I do have three dedicated synth sounds, a grindy sound, two different drop tuned programs, and one dedicated for No More Tears, which has more going on than on the record, but it works for me.

For me, effects are used seldom.

My signal chain, currently, is Bass->SansAmp BDDI->BOSS GT-6B->Fender Rumble 500 combo. Both the BDDI and GT-6B will stay in bypass mode for most of a show. There are a few songs where I will use some of the patches on the GT-6B, and one song where I will engage the BDDI for a spot where there is a bass solo. Both are never used at the same time, at least not in my current band.

Nothing at all against the no effects guys and gals, but I'm curious regarding how you even find out about these threads. I have no clue what's going on in the forums in which I don't have an interest. I hope they're all enjoying themselves without me.

99% of my viewing pleasure is off the New Posts.
If I have a Q I'll either search it here or on my browser which often lands me back on TB. There's no mirrors or smoke involved...

You either need pedals so you have to use them, or you don't. The third camp is: you don't need pedals, but you like to have them because sometimes you like to try things out.
I have an always on compressor, a preamp for DI out, and a bunch of pedals for fun, that I use every now and then. Pedals are a great way to be creative. Just the bass guitar gives you a lot of options, but now imagine all those options with different effects. If you just want to play Motown all day every day, then you won't need pedals for that.

Is this another 'I don't use effects" thread in the effects forum?

Apparently. Since that sort of thread is not allowed by the effects forum rules, and since it’s difficult to determine intent, I’ll move this thread to the Miscellaneous forum like the last couple of these threads that have been reported.
