In my experience auditioning bass players or guitar players (depending on which I'm playing in a particular band), a brand-new-looking expensive instrument or a large pedalboard (or both) equals a potential red flag. Not definitive - sometimes the player turns out to be one who can play well and, more importantly, who listens and responds to what the other players are doing - but it bodes ill.
I'm curious. Why do you say 'bodes ill'?
What are you basing that on? Examples?
