I want a RickenBacker 4003

While I mos def agree with/u , in all fairness there are a few really nice folks over there. Just have to like every thing about them (RIC's), or be an outcast. Been there (outcast) since 2005 and proud of it. Im done.

Gee, what a surprise! Of course, the people at the Warwick, G&L, Fender, Ernie Ball and other sole manufacturer-based are totally different, and will happily chat all day about modding their brand and endorsing how great other products are.
Bottom line, if you want to buy a used Ric at the best price, the Ric forum is the place to go. I bought a minty '04 4003 there for $1300 earlier this year. The forumites were extremely helpful and full of great information.
On the other hand, if you act like a knob at the Ric forum, you'll be treated like one, which is the case at just about any other forum on the www.

Yep there are some really nice people there as well ...
...but that's totally irrelevant! As long as the player is happy with the instrument, everything is fine.
Rics are magic, they glow from within, they lift their owner to higher spheres and stuff
I feel happy by only looking at them (got a 4003 and two 4004). I absolutely love to play them, having different strings on them makes them sound totally different. I'm sooo happy owning them.
If you don't share that feeling - fine. Ric owners do feel that way and that makes them as special as their basses

I got a nice used 4001 off ebay for 960.00.....there are deals to be had...my only suggestion is that you try one before you buy....I have had 80 of them and each one has been different. of course there are differences among them but that is why you need to play one before you buy....Not all of them are great (same with every other bass manufacturer)...

The last white 4003 I saw was a 97/98 ish model...they have not made white for a while....

The best way to get a Rickenbacker these days is to buy a used one from craigslist or ebay. Then you don't pay list price and wait 2 years.

Hmmm. I am a member and occasional poster at the Ric Resource. I am not a fanatic or extremist about Rics, but don't think it's THAT much different to anywhere else. You will get heated disagreements about specific types of basses everywhere, especially on a 'specialist' forum.
There is a noticeably great depth of feeling there about copies of Rics. On here, people seem to get wound up about Fender copies. I personally wish makers had the brains to make up their own new designs.
I have 3 4003's and really like them. There are other basses I own that I use and possibly like a whole lot more. No-one over there has ever taken a pop at me for it.

Seems like the economic troubles are driving down the Ric prices on the 'bay; certainly you can get one well under the $2k price people are talking about on this thread, possibly close to half that. Probably close to the price of a new American Fender. And I've found much more uniformly good quality of Rics than some hit-or-miss experiences with American Fenders.
That said....get one of everything!

I love the sound, look and the neck on RICS and have had a 4003. I wanted one so badly after watching McCartney play one. Alas, I cannot play them with that bridge pickup cavity and sold mine. Another lost love

With the bridge pickup selected on the Ric and the tone full up on both, they sound remarkably similar-that bridge pickup is in pretty much the same place as the pickup on the P.
It's part of the lyrics from a Zappa track called Sofa, translating to "I am the chrome dinette." It's off the album One Size Fits All, a portion of whose cover makes up my avatar.
