I wish I knew about SX earlier.

Thanks, and trust me when I say I did not intend to have this many basses! But the price and quality of the SX basses is allowing me to experiment with configurations (the natural SJB 4+1 has flats, and although the SJB-62 and SJB-57 both are stock at the moment, the SJB-57 is just waiting for me to save up enough to put an audere in).

Dabbler, did you mod those J Basses? How does the 5 string SX J Basses sound? Do they have usable low Bs?
I own two SX basses. A mini J bass which I absolutely LOVE and an Essex 5 string which I don't like that much. I bought these when they still had a store in Union and was able to play them to make sure the necks were straight w/no dead sports. I think all manufacturers produce duds from time to time so I don't like ordering blind.

I modded the 4+1s. Economy badass style bridge and allparts alnico pups. The rest of them are all stock except a pickguard or 2.
So the 5ers now have really warm, full sound (the natural one has flats on it). But in gaining the warmth, I lost the punch, which is part of the reason I bought the SJB and SPJ 62's with full intentions of leaving the stock pups in them. Yes, the B's work, but I have found that with the webstrings 0.130 B's (which is what I use) I have to loosen them up where they cross the saddle and nut. I do this by bending the string in a tight radius until I fell it loosen up, once that's done, I'm good to go!
I should also probably mention that I only intended to change the bridge on the 5ers, but the bridge spacing was wide enought that it caused the B response to drop off, and the only reason I got the allparts pups was to get the B response back.
I have had both, and both have been good to me. I like to mod mine. I'm looking for a squier affinity 5 string now. I did not like the narrow string spacing of the SX 5 string.The affinity series is the only squier that uses alder. Course you will have to upgrade everything else. I kept my ash 4 string. Put a badass bridge, dimarzio j's, and upgraded the pots and jack.

I really wish SX had a 5-string P bass option. There's other import basses like Kona, etc on Ebay that are building them, but I just can't seem to make myself gamble on those complete unknowns.

According to Kurt at Rondo, they "had" a 5-string P bass for sale at one point. Guess I completely missed that offering.

It was a P shaped body with J style p/u's, so not a true P 5'er.
I'm sure you could have modded it with a P5 p/u, but you'd have to have a new pickguard made to go with it.
