I had a Maxon AF9 but it didn't really do it for me. It sounded sort of monochromatic with my bass, really punchy but just not twisted enough. This probably makes no sense to anyone but it's so subjective. I prefer the Q-tron which sounds a little closer to a phaser to me where the AF9 sounded more transparent like an eq. But, I may like it better with my new bass, who knows?

Hmmm, well maybe it's just new to me, but I wasn't feeling it tonight on my gig. Sounded good when you put some distortion to it, and had a big fat bottom, but really kind of got lost in the mix, even with as much peakiness as I go for. Then again, it may have been that I used the B-15. Maybe it would sound better through the SVT. So I'm withholding judgment on it, but first impression wasn't as good as I had hoped, so I'll be hanging onto the SYB-3 and maybe even snagging a cheap FX25 or FX25b. When I hear Flea on that video he did using the FX25, that's more the sound I'm looking for, but I don't think the AF-9 has it. I could be wrong, though...we'll see.

I had both (old Ibanez and new Maxon).
Fx sounds were alike, but the Bypass on the old Ibanez was the worst I ever experienced in a pedal!

Finally someone else who has one! Thanks for the input. I'm finding myself agreeing with you so far.

BTW, the Maxon AF-9 has also been discontinued now.

Bummer.

I wish I could say the same, bro. I spent about an hour with the AF-9 and the SYB-3 last night after posting in this thread, and I decided I liked the SYB-3 better...I loved the tonality of the AF-9, but I couldn't get an extreme enough sound for my tastes. I can certainly see how someone could like it, but I think I'm sticking with the SYB-3.
