IBANEZ ARTCORE TONE PROBLEM SOLVED !!!

Again - sorry about the mixup. I forgot that the original cap was .05. 0.22 is a very common value - you should not have any trouble finding it. Please note that you can also use 2 x 0.1. 0.1 is probably the most common value. install them in parallel with each other and 2 pcs of 0.1 become 0.2 - close enough.

In the original configuration the tone control does nearly nothing. For me it just changed the sound in some way but didn't roll off any highs. With the new pot and cap values, it will work just like a "normal" bass. It will also sound a little different because the pickup will now be loaded properly by the 50K pots.

I bought an Ibanez AGB140 with intentions of doing this mod. I bought full size pots and they are too small, height wise to get through the body and still be screwed down. They aren't tall enough.

My question is, what pots, specifically, did you guys use?

You need to get the long-shaft pots that go in solidbody Les Pauls (for ex.). You will have to ream out the holes as the higher quality CTS or Alpha pots have slightly larger shaft diameters. Also put a backing nut and star washer on the inside portion of the shaft to adjust how far the shaft sticks up!

I think these are just long enough without the backing nut, the threaded portion is 3/8" and the pot is small to easily fit in the F-hole: http://www.allparts.com/EP-0282-000-50K-Mini-Pot_p_1305.html

Ok, so I'm really having a hard time believing the 3/8" bushing will be enough.

I can't seem to find any 1/2" bushing pots.

Can someone that has actually done this please confirm, exactly, what pots you used? Where you got them?

I'm almost to the point of putting back the original harness and selling it.

Guitar pots are normally audio taper. Some people prefer the linear, but audio will feel more "normal".

Capacitors are nearly ALWAYS specified in uF - Micro Farads, and occasionally pF= Pico Farads. Even the larger values are spec'd as something like 22,000 uF or 100,000 uF.

Anyway - in this case it is uF Micro Farads.

I modified my AGB140 last night, installing 2 new 50kohm pots with a .2uF cap. I bought the pots from AllParts (EP-0282-000) and they were the right ones, the only difference being that I needed to enlarge the holes a little bit for the diameter of the new pots. The immediate difference that I could tell was that before the mod, the bass’ tone knob seemed to affect only the G string. Now the tone knob affects all the strings, taking them from a mellow tone on each to a bright tone where I can even hear fretting noise on the half-wounds. Thanks to everyone who recommended this mod. A good bass now sounds even better.

Not too bad, Bassamatic. I took someone elses advice and tied dental floss around the old pots (and jack) before I pulled them out. Removed and retied the floss to the new pots, and pulled them back through. Worked fairly well with just a bit of holding my tongue in the right spot. :)

That's brilliant Bassamatic. Thank you, I really do appreciate your input on this. I can't wait to get the mod done & will report back when I have. Cheers

Also very appreciative, Bassamatic! I taught a 12 y/o how to solder last night with this project, and it was a big win all the way around. Thank you very much for posting this mod and continuing it across the board with your input. I went into it with no fear, and came out with a great sounding instrument and a successful lesson! I recorded the "before"--planning to record the "after" this morning. Even using my Focusrite Saffire and studio monitors (I use the setup for recording and it was handy) the difference is clear. This is the way it should have been built originally.
I'll have to post a NBD just because of this mod. :bassist:
