I like my korean BTB Prestige 6-string and I might get 5-string BTB..

Just to throw a monkey wrench into this, I remember the BTB 1305e prestige is actually made in Korea, not Japan. And it was a bit of controversy over the Prestige label.
Currently looking at doing this on a 405 at the moment, thinking of upgrading to a Glockenklang pre-amp.
Will look at the pickups at a later date depending on the outcome of the pre-amp upgrade.

Getting some USA Bart's for my 575MFM, replacing the incorrect MK2 6 string pickups that were in it. I plan to keep the MK2 preamp for now. Looking to be able to finally play it properly 
Ill try to keep it short lol. Well I bought a used Btb575mfm a few weeks ago. Played great, sounded great, great price, everything I expected, so took it home and set it up to my liking, that's when I noticed that my 'A' string was really quiet compared to the other strings. After searching and even calling Ibanez customer support, I found out that the MK2 pickups that were in it, were the 6 string versions. The MK2 shape (1.25" x 5.00") is the same on 5 and 6 string BTB basses, it's the inner coil design and layout that is different. They are a quad coil design which is 4 bar magnets inside that look like this ==. Follow still? well the gap between the bars on the MK2-6's runs vertical right in the middle where the 'A' string is on the 5 string, and it was that gap that was making the output super weak. Sooo now I have some Bart's on the way and I'm pretty excited. I actually liked the MK2 but it was a major problem.

I've had 3 Audere's in other basses. They are a very natural sounding preamp. I had the classic with MK1 Bart's in a Lakland 5501 and American Bart's in the same bass. They are nice but are a little "tame" for my tastes. The classic is a Great pre for the money and a breeze to install.

Well atleast you've got your answer
I find it strange (in a way) that a so called "boutique" style bass does not have a design specific pick-up. To me the bass looks like it has the wrong pick-up in it.
It's a really goofy cost saving effort to me.
