Ibanez Ergonomic Headless Bass (EHB) club

The locking input jack on my 1005SMS just ate a 20 year old Monster cable. I've never had a locking jack before: Is this just something that happens with an old cable sometimes? Am I using the thing wrong? Should I just not use a Monster cable with it?
Never owned one, but the few BTB's I've tried/borrowed before were a bit of a challenge because of that locking jack.

I read somewhere that Monster oversized their male connectors on the cable just a little bit for better connection or something like that. Ended up breaking some jacks. If I remember correctly, and if that info is also correct. Calipers could tell us if you measure.

The reason I'm saying this, is if it is oversized, I can see a locking jack like that having more issues mechanically.

You're probably not doing something wrong with it. I have several cables that get a little stuck in the jack, and it's just generally tough to use in the spot that it sits on the bass, not to mention Monster having a rep for oversized plugs on their TS cables. Breaking tips is unusual but not unheard of and I imagine the locking jack makes it easier, unfortunately.

Aaaaaaaaarrrrrrrrrrrrrrgggggggggggghhhhhhhhhhhh....

EHB1005SMS tracking updates from USPS:
  • Tucson post office to Tucson distribution centre: ~ 4 hours.
  • Processing through Tucson distribution centre: 9 hours.
  • Tucson to Los Angeles international distribution: 6 days.
Still to come:
  • LA to Canadian border.
  • Canadian customs processing.
  • Canada Post delivery from ??? to London, ON (2 hour drive northeast of Detroit, MI).
USPS has always been my friend in the past. Cheap, relatively fast, never had any damage in transit, and no courier company holding my package ransom for days while they sting me 25% or more in "brokerage fees".

Hoping that the protesters have moved on by the time my new toy reaches the border...
This is pretty funny...

Long story short- the bass arrived in LA on the 17th, and showed as having been transferred through the facility the same afternoon. That was when Canada Post first saw it as having left the States and enroute to Canada.

Not so. I got an update from USPS after lunch today, indicating that after moving around LAX for FIVE DAYS, it finally left "a transfer airport" in Los Angeles for Canada!

I don't mind, actually. I always take regular USPS with tracking, because I've never had parcel damage, the rates are way cheaper than Fedex, Purolator, etc., and for some reason USPS sometimes bypasses he Customs process, arriving with no duty or brokerage fees owing.

Plus, I'm not in a rush- the anticipation is fun.

It works! Did it myself when I got my 1505 a few months ago, thanks Nuage420, jigman and to whoever is the credit for the awesome hack is due.

I wonder if Ibanez is sourcing a cheaper offshore version of the regular Neutrik.

The locking jack on my Dingwall was smooth as butter from day one, easily opens with a slight push of my thumbnail, and is just as solid after 9 years. I've put them in other stuff, and never run into a bad one.

I've been reading up on all the John East pre-amp posts in this thread and just want to ask the three people I've seen advocating these...

@Nuage420
@Funky40
@D.A.R.K.

Are you still rocking your EHBs with the East pre? Do you still recommend the swap? I'm currently on the stock preamp and the Nordstrand Big Splits and I'm still not finding the clarity I'm after, and I've seen you talking about that. Does the East pre remove some of the mud?

I'm particularly interested in how it affects the low end, but across the board as well.

I have a dark glass tone capsule, but just because I broke my East pre being a caveman with the trim pot. Once it's fixed it's going right back in. The tone capsule big split combo is great but not as versatile as the East pre. You can make anything sound like anything you want with it.

Yes !
in short: yes, go for it ! The East EQ is super clear ! the ibby slightly muddy in the low mids/lows, and overall somehow "undefined". That was my impression as well.

Sorry folks,.....looong post, caused by enthusiasm. :laugh: starts here:

i have a second Bass now also with the same East pre setup:
( i run it as a semi-custom setup: a Uni-pre3 + a midsweep 01, combined to a 4band setup with TWO sweeping mids / prewired by John / so, comes as finished as a uni-pre 3 does )
The second Bass had also the stock Ibby pre inside for some period of time ( a 34", 5er, neckthru, Ovangkol )
So, i had also some time to play both pres, the East and the stock Ibby, side by side.

please note: i play NOT thru any amps + Cabs !!! only thru a Good tube pre setup, into mixer, ...then headphones or studio speakers ( 5" or 7" )
( also to mention, i run both basses E-hiB !
not shure if i ever played with the East EQ with a low B on the bass )

yes, my impression too, in both basses: the ibby onboard pre, has something "slightly muddy" to it "in the lower mids or lows" * ( * can´t distinguish these two ).

my main impression with the East EQ at first, and still remaining:
yes, it feels especially "clear sounding", beside all its versatility soundwise.
The highs do feel a bit harsh (as has been mentioned here at TB in other threads i stumbled upon), ....maybe tailored more for older pickups ? idk.
They could be a bit tamer for modern strong sounding PUps, thats true. But its absolutely manageable to deal with. Just adjust the high EQ very subtle !
it works for me ! .....no real complaints on this from my side.

@auvkey
so, you seem to be one of they few who does perceive the stock ibby pre as muddy/slightly muddy...? It seems, most folks do not. Then yes, anyway, head for the East EQ ! ( Can´t comment on any other aftermarket onboard pres/EQs)

i did similar settings with both pres.
I also tested the East pre by NOT touching one band, and just use it as a 3 band EQ.
I do run all possible settings, thats my nature having knobs at hand, .....since i´m no longer a bassist, but a sounddesign guy since 15 years or longer.

what i can tell, ......adjusting all these knobs is not everybodys cup of tee, for shure.
3 band ibby, or 3 ....or 4 band East.
I have been happy with the ibby 3 band too.
To have 3 Bands IS great anyway !

BUT, and that tells something:
i´m quicker to dial in "my sound" with the East EQ, ...even despite the fact that i run it as a 4 band setup.
The slightly muddyness, undifferentiatedness of the ibby, ...and the clarity of the East EQ, .......beeing factors here, IMHO.

Not everybody would like to have a 4 band setup, ..even not a 3 band setup,
But i personally would recommend to opt for the 4 band setup when taking an East uni-pre. At least if you seek "a big" versatility in tone !

it works like this:
i look at the Bass and low-mid sweep EQ as one pair !
Highs same: the hi-mid EQ and the high-EQ ( plus its switch to emphasize a certain freq) do work also like a pair !
They help each other out.
so, my 4 band setup is more like a 2 band setup, with two EQs each.
Giving an immense flexibility !
But, to each his own ! Folks playing with Amps might have diffferent needs, true !

No, modifications on the ehb1005sms needed to install "that" semi-custom 4 band setup !...just to mention. ;)
just: its VERY dense ! ...and takes some upfront thinking and planning ( pictures are available on the EAst preamp thread)

Go for the East EQ ! its super super awesome.
I´m stoked till this day. Best sounding basses ever. lol
ahh, and then: take the highs a bit out by running pure Nickel strings ! or NPS
Thats the deal !
( in fact are my Pyramid PNs and my Fodera NPS similar sounding, vs. its brightness.
Its the perfect match with the East EQ on the ehb1005sms)

also to mention, and probably way underrated here:
with such an onboard EQ + good modern clean&clear PUPs, do you perceive *the differences* between strings, completly different !
its just another world that opens up.

a warning: but its NOT necessarily for people who seek a pure vintage P- Bass Tone. :laugh:.....yet, i would have claimed i can dial in any tone.
purists would disagree ! ( i have now myself a P- and a JP.....i can disagree now myself vs. myself, lol)

also: the "compression effect" with the stock ibby EQ is NOT given with the East EQ.
i personally liked that compression effect with my BigBlades, ....and even miss it a bit.

I no longer have the EHB, although I still hold it in high regard.
My current bass has an East preamp in it though.
It's like having a high quality channel strip pre/eq in the bass, for me.
Being able to adjust the frequency range of the boost/ cut on the lows is amazing.
You can set the low and high shelf independently, I think the low shelf goes all the way up to 80hz.

@auvkey highly r
Well, that settles it!

Just ordered the UNI-PRE 4 Knob, will report back when it's in the EHB :) Did some other reading about East preamps in other basses, too, and it seems just about every time folks see it as an improvement, so I can't wait for mine.
Perfect, it'll be a direct swap. SHIELD YOUR CAVITY!! all of it pickups too. And you'll need to add a ground onto the shielding

What type of solder do you use in basses. Was contemplating doing this in my ehb but have not soldered anything before. I have welded before at a previous job so I’d imagine a couple YouTube tutorials I could tac a string lickity split…people still say lickity split? Lol

If you can weld you'll solder just fine. It's just tiny tacs. I use whatever my iron came with. highly encourage you get something like this to help hold stuff together though. I shake a lot trying to hold the little wires.
