Ibanez Musician Bass Club

I wish they would reissue.
That would be nice, but I don't think Ibanez will do this. Building a bass of this quality would probably be too expensive to build and sell. The Musician has always been a high-end instrument, showing the craftmanship of Ibanez. They just wanted to build the best instruments to show the world what they were capable of. And they did. But Ibanez couldn't keep this going regarding the cost of these mainly handcrafted instruments. They started making cheaper instruments to make money, just that simple. But they had already established themselves as makers of very good instruments. I bought my first Musician back in 1981. In that time, a new Fender P was way more expensive than my MC924, and I had all the features I wanted.... A P bass is good, but I consider my basses better value for money.... They're still great to play and sound very versitile. A reissue? yes please, but not a bad copy of the original. Ibanez has already enough choices in cheap and mid-priced basses.

I am the idiot here. I traded mine.

So I believe I have a rare MC2940 on its way…. I’ll find out sometime next week, but it appears to be a factory lined fretless! The serial number is different, but similar to at least 1 other we’ve seen. There was that Arctic white model with Super 4s, that was for sale for a really long time, that had a similar number. I’m wondering if the format was used for special order instruments?

Nice Greg!

From 1986 I guess?
Looks like the SR-shape is already there, ending the Musician line (almost). Could this be a kind of prototype, like the Pearl White one you mentioned? It should be lighter than most Musicians as well, it looks to me as it has a bit smaller headstock and slimmer bodyshape.

They made these in ‘86 and ‘87. The final Musicians before the SR style. Volume, balance, treble and bass. Active EMG style pickups. Supposed to be 4.3kg, although I have now bought 2 that were meant to be that weight. Hopefully this won’t be the third.

I hadn’t thought of the prototype idea. With the white one, it would mean they were experimenting with the finish over a year before being introduced. White wasn’t introduced until ‘83, from memory.

A thorough exploration to come as usual. Until then, in ‘86 they were the same spec as the MC924/940, other than smaller bodies.

No Musicians appear in any European or US catalogues in ‘87. The MC2940/2924 are in the Japanese catalogue, along with the stylish late ‘80s fashions.

They have an unfinished body and neck in ‘86.

One of my MC924 PW's is from May 1982. I'd think that proto was from '81. But we don't know for sure.

The MC2940 arrived yesterday. I’ll post some pictures soon. Regarding the serial number mystery, I just noticed the Polar White bass in the ‘82 catalogue, has the same format serial number. I think your prototype idea could be correct @Jan-Arend Blok.

You can’t see it clearly, but definitely the same format.

Very interesting! How's the (new) bass?

It’s a Musician, but different. Same neck construction, which seems to be the key to their even response. In between the originals and the Bean in body size. The pickups are quite bright. Definitely EMG sounding. I had assumed the bottom row of knobs were the eq, as that’s what the others always were. No! Bottom row, closest to the neck, is pickup blend. Then bass. Top row is volume and treble. I’ll post some photos tomorrow.

Still using inductors in the eq. 3 boards this time. Pots are mounted to the boards.

Haven't confirmed it, but I think the screw for the battery cover door, is bigger. :smug: Otherwise the same. No longer "Made by the Proud Craftsmen of Ibanez Japan".

Recessed barrel jack, instead of plate.

Now for the interesting part!! The lines don't go through the bass side of the board. So, looks neat and shows off their skill. Defeats the purpose of having them, while standing, as you can't see them!!!

The do go through on the treble side.
