Ibanez Phat II EQ

Dear Amimbari, Duffy49, Modern Growl, M0ses and Toastfuzz; thank you so much for your informative, honest and thought-provoking feedback. It is deeply appreciated, believe me.

The Phat II EQ unit is now in the innards of my bass player's Washburn XB125. After several rehearsal sessions and live gigs, it continues to function as it should, i.e. boosting the volume/highs/lows; sans noise. Case closed.

Amimbari, that's a nice preamp you have in your GSR200. Neat layout and soldering. Perhaps you could share the circuit diagram with us? Just a suggestion :).

Toastfuzz, I will definitely check out the SR400's active circuitry if they have one on display at Kuantan Music (the only guitar store here). Thanks for the info.

I think it sounds great, once a person knows what it is for, and knows it's not a "be-all-end-all" to eq. It's just another tool, one I find useful. Even EMG calls it "unconventional." The best known exponent of the guitar version is, of course, David Gilmour.

I also have a GSR200. "Just Because", I'd like to remove the Phat II EQ. Can someone explain in detail how to...
1. Remove the Phat II EQ so tha bass can be passive.(Wiring diagram is possible)
or
2. Detail how to upgrade to a better preamp with a bypass switch. (Wiring diagram is possible).

The Ibanez "Phat II" is their OEM branded version of the EMG EXB. If you look at an EMG EXB, it is identical, and the leads coming off of it in my SRA305 say EMG on them.

The function of the EXB/Phat II is unique: it simultaneously boosts lows and highs, while dipping at 1 kHz. I find it to be a most useful, versatile control. I can add a bit of depth, or go on a variable basis from straight ahead to a slap-and-pop setting, or in conjunction with the tone control rolling off some of the highs get some good thickness. It also buffers the outputs of passive pickups, which you can use with it, and gives a good clean signal to the amp, DI box, effects, etc., whatever you need.

Great control. I wish all basses had them onboard.

If a person simply cannot live with it, Ibanez wires all of their passive pickups and controls first in the signal chain, then to the input of the EXB/Phat II. So unsolder the input leads from the pots, and instead wire the bass conventionally passive, which for most Ibby models would be V-V-T, effectively J-bass wiring. Make sure to take the battery out of the box so it doesn't corrode.

BUT BEFORE YOU DO -- fully counterclockwise is effectively "off," and out of the signal chain, leaving only the buffered version of the passive signal. This is most useful for matching impedances better down the line, and it uses so little current you may not have to change a battery for several years if you don't use it.

So consider leaving it in. You will probably find a use for it someday.
 
It only takes soldering a jumper wire from the tone pot wiper lug that is the input to the Phat II, to the tip lug of the jack, bypassing the Phat II, and taking the battery out. Easy and reversible: just clip it out if you don't like it. Only after you have done it, or after using an alligator clip jumper to see what it sounds like to you, can you make that determination. I'm not trying to be a smart-a$$. "Should" is a subjective word. If you like straight ahead bass tones, and you don't mind modifying an instrument, especially a bass as common and inexpensive as the Ibby SRA/GR series, then go for it. If you are unsure about your skills with a soldering iron, or don't think it is cost effective to have someone else do it, or are concerned about selling the bass later, then maybe not. I decided I liked my bass with the Phat II and kept it. But then again, I have modified every instrument I have owned in the almost forty years I have played electric guitar and bass, even my Rickenbacker 4002 bass.

I would say that most of the problems with noise and hum with P/J configuration SRA/GR series basses are as a result of the J-single coil bridge pickup being just that - single coil instead of humbucking. Since the Phat II also boosts highs as well as lows, any inherent noise will be more apparent when the Phat II is engaged. And the Ibanez SRA and GR series basses are so inexpensive it is not necessarily cost effective to upgrade the pickups or add additional shielding, although a split coil J-bridge pickup would be a great improvement to eliminate noise and hum. On my SRA305, I did upgrade from the stock EMG Hz40's (very good humbucking passive pickups in their own right) to EMG active soapbars and the EXB, which is exactly the same control as the Ibanez Phat II, just with the Ibanez proprietary name etching on them, (The older ones actually say EMG on them!) and only because I wanted the full insulated treatment (plastic covers, no bridge ground) for outdoor gigs, and I play nylon tapewounds. Because for me, it is a tool to earn money, it was worth it, even though the cost of the two EMG soapbars and the EXB ended up costing almost as much as what I paid for the bass originally as a factory second - the control panel had been opened up to fix something, breaking the little tape "seal" on one of the back cover screws, so the retailer could not sell it as "new," although it had never been out of the store.

So with all the information I can supply you, "should" you modify your instrument? If the answer to everything I have stated is, "Yes," then probably. All I can do is post information, not guarantee results, which seems to be the tone of your original question - asking for a guarantee of suitability of jumpering the Phat II.
 
In replying above, I had a thought I'm going to try. I'm going to switch out the tone pot for a DPDT push-pull pot. I'm going to wire the battery negative lead to the "down" position of one side so it is "on" in normal operation. I'm going to wire the jumper on the "up" position of the other side so that the bypass is switchable. This does two things: 1) it provides a switchable bypass in case the battery dies in the middle of a set so I can keep going until break to change the battery; and 2) it provides an "off" for the battery if I want to leave the bass plugged in.

That only leaves what to do to buffer the switch so it doesn't pop. That can be anything from a simple 1 meg resistor from the input of the Phat II to ground (what it would drain off is negligible for bass), up to a full IC op-amp buffer circuit on another small square of circuit board mounted in the control cavity, as here: Invalid Link Removed . For bass, I would increase C1 to .1 or .22 to make sure the lower frequencies were passed properly.

Onstage, the circuit lived up to its promise, providing a discernible bass boost controlled by a dedicated B20K pot. The Phat II also seemed to boost the highs and reduce the mids.

The only problem was that along with the boost came an intolerable amount of noise, thanks to the single coil pickups. This problem, plus the lack of a bypass switch, prompted me to remove the Phat II EQ and rewire the GSR205 along the lines of a Fender Jazz Bass. Hope you enjoy the pics :).

Thanks for this post about the Phat II eq. I just bought a used GSR206 six string bass and was debating gutting the electronics. This post confirms my decision; the Phat eq has to go in favor of an upgrade.

The Phat II EQ came as a standard feature on my black GSR205 when I purchased it in 2006. Onstage, the circuit lived up to its promise, providing a discernible bass boost controlled by a dedicated B20K pot. The Phat II also seemed to boost the highs and reduce the mids.

The only problem was that along with the boost came an intolerable amount of noise, thanks to the single coil pickups. This problem, plus the lack of a bypass switch, prompted me to remove the Phat II EQ and rewire the GSR205 along the lines of a Fender Jazz Bass. Hope you enjoy the pics :).

There is an easy fix for this problem . My wife gave me one of these basses for xmas . I don't care for active elecs . I like passive . I cut the end(U) off of a standard size paper clip and shoved it into the plug on the Phat II . One end in the in and the other in the out . Took the battery out and Ba-da-boom , a passive bass . Sounds great .
 
Umm... Please don't take this as mean, but what is your point or message? Why all the pics, from all angles, of a cheap and ordinary preamp module, one that is no good because it's too noisy? What's to enjoy? I'm genuinely confused.
I don't know, I'm considering buying this bass, and it's good to know potential issue----oh god, what am I doing? This guy posted that in 2005, I don't think anyone cares anymore.

In the spirit of getting better info to those who need it, this thread is now older than my mate's teenage daughter, but for anyone asking for pics with the chip off, this is a newer version but probably mostly wired the same as the older one posted here. Enjoy it, 2 people who care!

I highly recommend completely removing any Phat-II modules in any bass. I think they're horrific sounding.

Yeah, I took mine out because to my ear it was adding a little clipping. To me it was not pure for what I wanted to do. I rewired it like a J-bass. I also didn't like the idea that I had to leave the battery in (dead or alive) just to be able to play it. Now the battery compartment is an extra pick compartment. Now it has a really clean sound.
