Why? Why would you want to get rid of the beautiful new elixer sound?? r u nutz? I guess it take different strokes to rule the world... but i'll take a nice bright string anyday over a dull sound.

I like the sound of oily old strings... the sound like poop coming out the amp... I like it. Sorry bad analogy... I like that Claypool sound.

And the SR506 is always active, cannot switch to passive.

Iunno, the Elixers were the number 1 thing I didn't like about the SR506. Moved to a set of D'Addario 6 string nickels... much better. I can't wait to string it up with DR Stainless Steel strings (technically getting them for xmas tomorrow... I might not change up for a while though, I wanna really exhaust my strings)

Mm. They're great basses. I've had mine for almost 2 years now, and it's held up extremely well. There are a few things I'd change about it, but I don't have any real beefs about it.

I do love the Elixir strings, though. Going at a little over 21 months on these and they sound perfect to me.

Nice analogy! fair enough... but can't you get that "poop" sound from eq'ing, can't you?

I've been jonesing to trade in two of my Ibanez SR-305's for a 505. It's just as comfy as my basses, but the TONE! The TONE is lightyears better than stock Ibby pickups and EQ. What a difference.

In fact... after I finish my project bass, once it's functional and broken in, I'll trade in my two for it. As long as I get this one done and 100% ready for the stage, then the 505 will be my stage backup!

Yes, I can turn my Mid and Bass all the way up on my bass and on my amp head, and it sounds JUST LIKE Claypool's Walnut 4 string... that is until I thumb or pop notes, then the notes sound really hollow.

Used? Screw that. Guitarded Center has them NEW for $570. Unless you find one used for FAR less than that, just go to GC and ask them to oder up a new one in the box just for you.

How is the neck dive? Also, does the narrow string spacing make slapping and popping really difficult?

Slapping and popping takes a lil practice on the 506, but if you have the bass sitting high enough, it's really not a problem.

If yer playing it at yer knees, however... Then yer screwed.
