I have a SR506 and a SR5006. It's an excellent bass. Especially if you play different styles. The 5006's neck seems slightly flatter than the 506. The 506 is nice, but the 5006 is really nice. The tone is very versatile. The powercurve eq is sweet. I take my 506 to rehearsals and use my 5006 on gigs. Back to your question: Yes, its active. It uses two AA batteries (6V) instead of a 9V battery. A lot of your high end basses use two 9V (18V) batteries which give them a lot of punch and clarity. The 5006 sounds really sweet with 6 volts. I don't know how they pulled that off. The SR506 is manufactured in Korea and the SR5006 is manufactured in Japan which makes a giant difference. The SR5006 has better pickups, better hardware, a better pre amp, and exotic Wenge and Bubinga African woods. Have you noticed the bridge? Each string has it's own bridge. This is the first bass that I didn't have to tweak. The intonation was dead on right out of the box. The SR5006 is three and a half times more expensive than the SR506, but well worth it. So if you haven't purchased it yet, go play a SR506 at Guitar Center or any Ibanez vendor. It feels pretty close to the SR5006 but the pre amp is always on. I hope this helps.

P.S. the 506 ain't too bad either for $630.

I always hear how expensive these SR Prestiges are. These play great and are beautiful. Certainly right there with many more expensive, plainer looking basses.

I own one (SR5006e) and it is fantastic. For me personally I have never yet played a bass I like more then it. It sounds good through anything and it has quite a versatile tone range. I know they're a little (okay, a lot) pricey but to be 100% honest it was better then the basses of the same price (in my humble opinion). Let's just say that a folk band that I gig with from time to time asked if I could try playing electric instead of my upright for a song and now they want me to use it all the time.

I think you didn't read carefully. It doesn't work with several battery types. MOST basses work with one or two 9v batteries. Apparently, ibanez took a differend route with the 5006.

Great basses but way overpriced IMO.

Correct. The Ibanez PWC-III preamp (currently used in all Prestige SRs) works with two AA batteries -- it's a 3 volt system.

(As I mentioned in the club thread, mine is dead and I'm having it replaced with an Audere. I'll keep you informed as to how it changes the sound)

For those who own the 5000 models, how is the shielding? I currently own a SR1006 (2006 model, check it out here http://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/SR1006EFMNTF ), and except for shielding issues and being too heavy for me for long term stage use @ approx. 12 lbs, it would be damn near perfect IMO...neck thru, super low action, stable neck...plays like butter.

The shielding issue is bad to the point where I almost always have to CUT highs on the EQ cause the EM interference was rediculous in nearly every studio/live sound setting...thought my bass had a malfunction but my friend bought one a year later and he said it had the same problem. Took it to a guitar tech and he confirmed that the shielding wasn't up to snuff. I typically work around it by finding the least noisiest part of the room, cut most of the highs and crank the mids. Always thought about trying to shield it better but then there's the weight issue.

Just wondering if the newer models sound better than the slighty older prestige models...

Hi guys, sorry for taking that old topic on top again, since the last post was made in 2009. I recently bought a used Prestige Sr5006 with good condition which I like so much. I used to play the SR506 for a long time. Good to switch to the Prestige, it worth every penny. First time I see the 3V preamp and I'm impressed.

The only issue I have occasionally from the Prestige SR5006 (not every time I plug the bass), is that there is some hizzing noise if I don't touch any metal parts of the bass. However, the noise doesn't happen every time, just occasionally. I can't manage to let it happen or I don't even know why and when it disappears.

I just wonder if any SR5006 owners has the same issue. If yes, how did you solve the problem? I'm thinking of self-shielding the electronic cavity only. Not sure if it works or should I do the shielding of the 2 pickup cavities too?
