I know that the this is a frequently asqued question, but the thing is that I've been thinking of buying a new bass (because my bass is an ACADEMY, which is good to start but I've been playing bass for 2 years and a half now and I think is time to change). I would like a bass to play any style and that will last long. I've thought of the G&L tribute series, which has very good comments in these forums; also in the Warwick Corvette $$, which I know is Chinese made; and finally Modern player Jazz bass. I want only 4 string basses please. I prefer basses with Jazz or Humbucker pickups. I would also like to know your opinions on the Ovation TX bass (the standard version, not the Nikki Sixx one).

go for something really nice used.
For that kinda scratch you could get a really nice used American bass.
Some names to consider: Fender(obviously), Guild, Hamer among others.
Look for something that's very versatile with premium pups and a great neck.
You're in the price bracket for that.

Since you've decided this bass thing is your bag, I'd say to save a bit more, and invest in a top line instrument that can hang with you, for the next ten years or more. As opposed to buying some Chinese mid-line ax to tie you over for another 6 months, until you out grow it. Don't be afraid to buy used ax either. You can save big money and still get a great instrument.

A GL L2000 USA used is in your price range and is a great instrument. Also used you could find a lakland skyline, fender American, a great Ibanez--the options are endless. Good luck!
The Warwick Corvette $$ RockBass model is made in China. The regular Warwick Corvette $$ is made in Germany. They are very well made and have a huge variety of tones. They go for around 700 used on these forums all the time. In fact there are 2 in the For Sale section now in your budget.
The Fender Modern player series IS made in China. Do not let that turn you off to them though. From my experiences with them I find them to be as good or better than the made in Mexico Fender basses. I have the Modern Player Jaguar, and I love it. The Modern Player Jazz is odd, because it doesn't actually sound to much like a Jazz, seeing has how it has no single coil pickups.
If you want a tradition jazz in that price range your best bets are a used Marcus Miller, Geddy Lee, or Road Worn. The Marcus Miller is made in Japan and is great if you prefer an active sound. The Geddy Lee is made in Japan and has a very small neck and a tradition Jazz bass sound. Lastly the Road Worn basses are made in Mexico, and are made to look old and beat. They have among the best traditional sound and playability that I have encountered in a mass production Jazz.
