Identify the SX vs. Fender in the mix thread

I probably should have been more clear on which parts I was agreeing with, but when I read that ,( I did BOLD what I considered to be the MAIN point and focus) the parts about being over priced just simply didn't register as being the "important" part of the post.

To me, IMO, etc. etc. the "important" part , and general point of that post was centered around the differences in the "attention to detail" and how that's relevent to the pricing.

I was responding quickly on my way out the door, and didn't have time to parse that particular post at the time, as I thought the point of it was pretty darned clear (at least in my mind)

You and I CLEARLY had a different interpritation of what the focus of that post was.
IMO. :)

At the time I posted my reply, I didn't honestly expect to get into a debate over what I consider to be a "secodary, less important" part of the post, and considering the time constraints I was under, figuered "mostly agree" would cover it.

Clearly I was wrong on that point. :D

Speaking as the person who posted what has been thrown up for debate for some reason, I want to say that you clearly understand the "gist" and "main point" I was trying to make. I don't think it's that complicated, and was directed to questions Lucas was asking previously.

And here we go again with the strawman BS.
:D

you:
"I think 1200 for a new MIA Fender is a rip-off, yes. I believe 750-850 would be fair".

Okay, you think it's a rip-off and you mentioned it's price and what you think is fair... a much lower price. And that in no way resembles the idea` that it's "overpriced". Because a rip-off based on the price being too high does not mean you think it's overpriced. It means you think it's priced okay... just too high. But not over.

And you're clearly not saying it's a rip-off with that leading statement. Quite the contrary. You just think it's priced okay, just about right and 1200 for it is a rip-off too. And you say you can get a new one for the price you said you like but you talk about the higher price which isn't okay... but not overpriced.

Yeah, it's me.

This is some flat out hilarious stuff. I don't expect you to respond directly to it so don't worry, I won't be surprised when you just say strawman again instead.
:D

Thanks... you're right. Again.

On the go, and on my phone again, but I gotta say "huh?"

Symantics aside, it should be clear to anyone that I consider 1200 to be too high, and if dealing with a local Mom and Pop, that would be where negotiations begin with a goal of hitting the 750-850 range where I would feel like I got a good deal and my money's worth.

That post that you are debating was just an attempt to respond to questions posted by Lucas, where he asked,(paraphrase) if SX can do the job is everybody else ripping us off? He specifically asked about 1200, so that is why I answered using 1200 as an example. That is also why I appear to waver some in that post, it's an attempt to answer his specific points.I don't know how to make it any clearer for you. Savit understood it, so it must be intelligable. Maybe it's a you thing;)

I don't have a problem with Fender at all, but as Savit already said, I'm not paying street price for anything that's high dollar. That even goes beyond instruments, to cars, houses, refridgerators, whatever.

Now, I'm starting to think about getting a brand-spanking new Fender American Standard P Bass:D Olympic White with rosewood and a tort guard looks pretty sweet!

I see where this is headed -

Sorry - just trying to inject some humor into something that has become a bit silly - at least in looking at it from the outside.

:)

...wait a minute. Mark Lind...Ducky Boys, Ballad of the Forgotten. He doesn't sound as gritty but it's him. Wow! That must be cool to play with him.

Yup, same guy. Been playing with him since about 2006. He still does a few Ducky Boys shows now and again. I actually played bass on a few songs with them at the last two shows they did, just for fun so Mark could just "work the mic and the crowd" . That was a good time.

Jay Messina of the Ducky Boys also plays drums with us in Mark Lind and The Unloved"

Seriously good guys.

All parts should have been stock.

Pointless.

I'd dig it if the parts were stock, and the tracks were the same. You'd have a better control for testing and polls...

That would be a good test, but more readily identified.

This isn't a pointless exercise at all - I think it makes a very good point. One that some people aren't very comfortable with. :D

i forget too.

;)

anyway, i know i said i was swearing off cheapos, but i had a gig last tuesday night where i wanted to play flats, and the only bass i currently have with flats on it was my sx p (the one i used in the sx vs 79 p test), and i must say i quite enjoyed it. so i'm back on the cheapos again ;)

Don't feel bad. I swore I wouldn't buy an Ursa headstock SX.

Then they came out with the Ash P basses.

Then I saw this ash B-stock for $99.00:

Then I added it to my cart, thinking that it would already be gone...nope.

Then I hit "remove"...went back 15 minutes later, added it to my cart again....still there...

Then I hit "checkout"

Now I'm hoping the folks who say that the headstock doesn't look as bad in person are telling the truth because I would like to see if I can keep this one stock as long as I can possibly stand it...I am pretty much over my heavy mod phase......(I hope).

I'm gonna come right out and say that after reading the first page of this thread, I skipped ahead to the last page so I don't know really where this thread has gone over the last 30 pages, but:

I couldn't tell the difference on a casual listen. Even if I spent all day carefully analyzing the tracks I probably wouldn't be able to tell, simply because there are too many variables to make any kind of definitive judgement call. If this test had been more scientific - pairs of tracks of just the two basses playing the same thing, with absolutely no EQ or compression or anything else coloring the tone, then I would consider it a fair test for those with skilled ears.

However, I certainly understand the value in what you instead proposed. In a real-world scenario, where you are playing with a full band and being professionally recorded with all sorts of tone-coloring doodads and gizmos, there are virtually no appreciable tonal differences in your $200 slightly-modified SX and your extremely-expensive pre-CBS Fender. Many people are complaining that the test is unfair with all of the variables and tone-coloring done by the studio, but that's exactly the point. I think it's an ingenious answer to all of the gear snobs here who in your words have been extremely insulting to anybody who would dare to say a cheapo bass could (could, but won't always) sound indistinguishable from a pre-CBS Fender.

Very well said.

Where were you twenty pages ago? :hiding:
