If you can start over......

Stay in college for years and years and years...get as much education as you can, but don't take too many classes in a given semester...play in college bands. Get a couple doctorates...in between touring with your bands. Take your time...but play a lot of bass and get a lot of education. The work crap can wait. That's my advice and I'm sticking to it.
 
Oh, one more thing...stay the hell away from women (unless you are a songwriter and need future material...then women should not be avoided.) If you are just a musician, not a songwriter, then become a monk bass player. I assure you, you will have a richer and happier life.
