I just keep thinking of the babble fish in Douglas Adam’s book Hithchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy. If you inserted one in your ear it linked into your auditory nerve and brain stem and allowed you to immediately understand any spoken language in the universe. It was thought that with this breakthrough in communication the galaxy would enter into a new age of peace and understanding.
What actually happened was it lead to an age of the bloodiest interstellar conflicts in history. Because now it was possible for everyone to understand
exactly what someone else was saying.
The Internet is a lot like that. It’s given voice to, and provided a global platform for, the best and worst humanity has to offer. And all for virtually no cost and at the speed of light.
I think they call that: ‘progress.’
