If you could only use one effects pedal for live music

What would it be? I have $200-$300 burning a hole in my pocket and have been debating getting a compression pedal, such as the Markbass Compressore. But I'm considering other options, such as a cheaper compressor (Boss LMB-3) and maybe another effects pedal.

I play a lot of classic rock and newer rock, and I'm a total noob when it comes to effects, even though I've played for over 20 years. I've never used a single effects pedal and honestly couldn't tell you what most of them do.

Your feedback is appreciated. What would offer me the most bang for my buck playing live? What effects do you rely on live?

Depends on the music you play. If you have played successfully for 20 years without the need for any pedals, why start now? I only ask because you have been content with your tone for so long. Unless you want to go for a new sound entirely, I'd say a good compressor will satisfy you, though only subtly. VT Bass would also be on the list.

For me, my compressor and VT are always on as my tone shaper. The pedal that I stomp the most in rock has been my Fulltone Bass-Drive. The other pedals on my board just add shimmer and fun, but I could get through a gig without them.

I'm happy with my regular tone, but I'd like to experiment (like I said, I feel like spending some money ;)). I'm just curious what others use most live.

Personally I use an Ibanez PD-7 Overdrive pedal, but only because it magically captures the perfect fuzz to bring the treble end of my bass through the wall of guitars while still keeping a deep bass fundamental. Tried a handful of more expensive/discontinued/boutique OD pedals and havent found one that works better for me.

The Markbass Compressore is great for a refined, inconspicuously clean & tidy sound that shines through. But it's controlled. Ithink that's the best way to describe it. For comparison, that Beatles band or that Michael Jackson guy used compression--granted not a Markbass pedal. Angus Young from ACDC doesnt use pedals. Maybe he's not a good example because he has no problems punctuating his guitar playing.
Most early Los Angeles punk bands did not use compressors to my knowledge. How's that.
