If you like a glossy neck, why?

I remember reading about how Geddy sands the back of his necks down. I tried it on a MIM P bass. All it accomplished was a grungy neck after awhile, and yes, I ALWAYS wash my hands before playing. I currently own 3 basses with neck through glossy necks, and while I do get sweaty hands playing, it's never been a problem.

I wonder why they don't make textured necks. If sticking is a problem for a significant portion of guitar and bass buyers you would think that would be at least an option.
They do

This might be silly but I feel like satin finished necks are somehow "cheap."
If I may wake up this thread after 4 years...
I'm definitely with you on this these days.

I have had a "I hate glossy necks" phase, and scotch brite has brighten my days. Then a slight gloss comes back with use and it is fine so far.

Something I have noticed recently when trying new basses with almost no finish behind the neck is that it really looks too unfinished to me, cheap, or too light, not dense enough and low quality. I know it is just perception, but I have to admit that I love more and more the patina on my 27 years old jazz bass neck and side of the fretboard. Even the tiny dings I can feel behind the neck. It makes the feel more lively, I know it is a bias, but that's the way I feel. Maybe just because of the shared history.

I have tried some Sandberg, Sire, Stingray etc, and found the neck feel too "dry".

Have a nice day !
