just out of curiosity, how would/does the VST version actually compare to the real thing, or an outboard device that is modelled after the 1176 ?

for reference, I own/use a Cali76CB which is suggested to be modelled after the 1176. I understand that its unlikely that the Cali76 is exactly like the original 1176, but it sounds great and works well for the purposes I use it for.


hmmm ... also, for reference, I went to sign up for the newletter and accepted the subscription, but I don't see any option to grab the Black 76 Comp anywhere.

According to many accounts the IK 1176 is among the most accurate to real hardware. The real hardware has several versions and a lot variability from unit to unit, but there’s always that overwhelming 1176 vibe. In general it’s among my least favorite compressors but for the things it does well there’s no substitute. These days I use one in dual mono mode on my rear buss and for that it’s just about perfect. I used to use one on my vocal crush buss, but they tend to fall apart on high levels of gain reduction and I’ve since moved on to a Distressor which has less overall character if you don’t saturate it, but holds up to high levels of gain reduction better than an 1176.

Accurate or not my favorite 1176 plugin is the Softube FET. I shot out the Waves CLA-76, IK and UAD versions. Softube was by far my favorite with Waves CLA-76 in Bluey mode coming in second. Waves VLA-76 Black, IK and UAD were all interchangeably “just fine, but not bad.”

I had a chance to compare my old Cali76CB to a hardware 1176 and while they weren’t identical the 1176 vibe was certainly present in the Cali. That particular vibe is why I got rid of it. Just not my thing, but again, if the 1176 “thing” is what you’re after, there’s nothing quite like it.

These are actually very reasonable prices for access to all the actual pro-gear for recording.

Use the IK version to estimate what settings you think you want as a starting point, then run it through the actual gear to see how it rates.

This is a great service. You don't always need every piece of gear all time, just need it at different phases of production. I actually wish software versions would also offer a rent for a week or so of some of the plugins.

As I mentioned above, there are a number of iterations of 1176 hardware units out there with some marked differences in how the midrange is processed. Blue stripes tend to have more midrange and are a little snappier sounding, whereas the black versions tend to be smoother in the midrange and hold up to higher levels of GR more effectively. Using this service will be able to compare plugins to whichever particular 1176 unit they have available. Maybe they have several units of different varieties, which would be really cool as an option. Despite the limitations of the comparison I can’t think of a better way to do it short of just buying up hardware
