I'm angry - who's with me?

I'm angry at the jacka$$ that stole my debit card info. Thankfully I caught it before he charged anything massive to my account. ARGH! :banghead:
I have had this happen six or seven times in the last 10 or so years. Get a Capital One credit card, they are great when this happens.
This is from the last one, about four months ago.
They call and ask, "Did you purchase a $2,000 t.v. at Wal-Mart in Florida?"
-NO, and I have never been to Florida.
"Ok, we have canceled the card and will mail you a new one, you should have it in three or four days."
A few days latter I have a new card and do not have to deal with the charges the *#@% charged.
All other fraud charges have been just as smooth.

I am not With Capital One or any of it's affiliates, just a happy customer.

That would be a good option, but this actually happened with my debit/ATM card, not a credit card. The good news is that I went down to the bank yesterday afternoon, expecting that I would have to wait a couple of weeks to get a new card. Nope, they made me a brand new one with the new chip feature in less than 10 minutes. I also updated my alerts so if anything posts to my account I will get an e-mail and an alert through the bank app. The charges were reversed as soon as I called the bank, so I'm bank to some form of normalcy, except being on high alert with my account numbers.

I use to live almost exclusively on my debit card.

It has been 3 years or so but this happened to me 4 times in roughly an 18-24 month period. They managed to actually get in one time and make a couple charges. I caught it twice and the bank caught it the other times and shut the card down.

Fortunaetly for me it was pretty obvious to the bank that it would have been impossible in all meanings of the word for me to have been the one to make the charges that did get through.

Unfortunately I found this out one of those times while I was having my car serviced but I had walked to another location to kill time and attempted to make a small purchase and boom. "No soup for you". I had no cash or other means on me and the car was already "in service". F****K! Fortunately after a couple frantic calls I managed to get it all worked out before the car was done.

My best guesses aside from it being my debit card as opposed to a credit card are that I got skimmed or remotely viewed at a drive-up ATM or a gas pump. No way to know for sure though. Now that makes me angry.

(side note: yes I have made purchases online however they are very few and far between, for whatever that's worth)

Since then, if it isn't cash, it is credit card only. They are much more secure and leaves you less liable.

-I have also completely stopped using drive-up ATM's.
-I never did and never will hand my card to a drive-thru food joint.
-I only use the card if absolutely necessary.
-If paying with a card I try to do it in a manner that does not allow the card/person to leave my sight.
-I pay closer attention to card slots for abnormalities.
-I don't hold either side of the card exposed anymore than necessary.
-I keep the keypad completely covered by my other hand when entering any sort of code.

All can say for certain though is that since making these changes and being more cognizant of the potentials I have not had any problems.

Screw the rewards and the miles and whatever other bulls**t they are trying pawn.

I prefer to keep my identity and the few dollars I might have.

Take all this as you will but I would strongly recommend taking a look at where, when and for what you use a card of any kind.

Not that I know what your activity is. Or do I? (I am completely joking.)

Yeah, I'm the same with my debit card, pretty much use it for everything, but I'm changing that. I do a fair bit of online shopping, pay bills online, but I think it's time to go back to the old way of doing things and start writing checks again for bills, and get a credit card for online purchases. I'm also going to have a look at Paypal and some of the options that my bank offers with regards to online billing, but I won't go that route unless there's a sufficient amount of checks and balances in place.

Looking back on my card use, I can think of a couple of dodgy places that might have been where my card number was taken, but in the end I'll never know. It could have been someone at a major store/website with a shady employee who sold a pile of card numbers for smack money. I'll just have to be as vigilant as I can with it, or just not use it.

Yeah there just isn't much you can do other than minimize your digital footprint as much as possible and short of going completely off the grid we are all susceptible to being hacked. Sucks but that is the reality of the digital age.

Good luck.

You got skimmed. Apparently the scammers are hitting gas pumps hard. They show up dressed as legitimate techs and just open the pumps, install their gear and drive away. You can't see what they did, because it's all inside. Amazing.

I used to be angry, now I'm not so angry anymore. Maybe it's because I retired in August and left the morons and idiots behind
in the city, slaving away at their mundane, help the CEO's get rich jobs. Now I work for me and my boss doesn't piss me off nearly
as much.
