Hey, i got a small question for you.

What do you think is a good bass to play metalcore in the tuning drop B?
I am thinking of a Ibanez SR600. Here is a link to it: [Invalid or Expired Link Removed]

My money limit is about 900 dollars and this one is on 867 dollar.
I want it to be light and to manage drop B good and also i want it to can handle a little distortion but not much.

So what is your opinions, is it worth the money or do you know of any other bass that is good?

A very good and nice to play bass for that kind of money is a Warwick Rockbass Corvette $$ set me back about £750, or you could look at the Music Man Sterlings which are a similar price. Both great basses. Not the true versions but for the price a great buy. The only problem with the Warwick is unlike Ibanez they have a wide neck but have a lovely tone to them and hold B perfectly.

Yeah that is an option, but dont i need to have the tuning : B-F#-B-E-G?
If i have standard tuning, would'nt i need to play different from the guitar then?

I have a 5-stringed bass wich i am not happy with because of the wide neck in the tunig i said above, and i play like my gutarists and it fits in to the song but the strings get really tense. Does it get better if i just change the strings maybe?

Still if there is anyone out there who has any tips on a 5-string with a small neck i would be happy to hear of it.

I've only tried out this bass... it's a good instrument. I will say that there are other options that matched this one far as build quality and electronics.

You can play whatever bass you would like. The strings and setup play a bigger part into being able to play in a dropped tuning. There articles online about using a dropped tuning. A google search with "Bass drop tuning setup .pdf" will pull up some good reading material so you can understand what is needed.

A bass is generally tuned in 5ths. Or we could say that it is standard practice to tune a bass in 5ths. So that is where the B E A D suggestions are coming from.

Do you understand what i mean by "tuned in 5ths"?

By tuning to 5ths you will still have the other notes available to you.

What do you mean by play different?

If you mean use different frets because your trying to match guitar tuning with your bass so you can use his fretboard as a reference of what to play the answer is ...yes. You will play the notes in a different spot on the neck. Especially if your guitarist has a non-standard guitar tuning.

Can your guitarist communicate the chords he is playing? If he can all you have to do is find the Root note on your bass.

If is is playing a B minor chord... with B E A D tuning... you could play the Open B string... or the 7th fret on the E string... or the 2nd fret on teh A string... or the 9th fret on the D string. All of these notes will be B.

Just because your guitarist is playing in a certain position does not mean you have to play in the same spot. You should be making that decision on what fits the song the best.

Your guitarist tuning shouldn't dictate how your bass is tuned. But I do understand your need for that Low B string.

I tune my bass B E A D often...:D

Paul Gray's was an Ibanez ash ATK with factory TripleCoil pickup, capable to switch from parallel to phantom coil to serial, much like a pricier StingRay

It was factory strung B, E, A, D and sporting a thinner neck...

Sharlee d'Angelo (Arch Enenmy) is a neckthrubody Ibanez mahogany IceMan with PFR passive humbuckers and two band equalizer and monorail bridge saddles

It's factory strung C, F, Bb, Eb (so easily - has heavier gauge than mentioned ATK - turnable into B, E, A, D)

But, to save something, I dare to suggest a 35" scale BTB700:
it's a 4er ash nechthru body but sporting EMG40 instead of 35,
monorail bridge saddles and Ibanez very own VariMid equalizer

It could easily accomodate a set of B, E, A, D strings. In fact EMG40 pickups are for 5ers, so lower frequencies are covered and RotoSound has a proper set already of the four instead of just dropping extra G out.

The instrument dosent have anything to do with distoration. I appreciate your asking questions about what bass to get , but What you need to do is go out and put your hands on a few of'em and realize what YOUR preference may be for what YOU want to do. Can't NOBODY tell YOU what feels and sounds right to YOU. Get up and at'em SOLDIER!!!!

The bass IS NOT generally tuned to 5ths. BAD INFO!!!!!! Generally and traditionally the bass is tuned to 4ths. Don't get it twisted!!!!! Good Luck.
