sounds like a good plan! Post us some pics when you get whichever bass it is! I guess the 5 string MM with the two pups is a bit more than your budget, and doesn't exactly have the J body. What about a Warmoth build? I do dig the G&L's too, Rational!

Ill definatly check out that G&L. and i went on the warmoth site and they did have the body builder but i can only put a jazz pickup in the neck position and not a humbucker.

Whether or not you can make it in under $1500 is dependent on what features you choose, but that number seems plausible to me.

If you can find one, you can aim for a Schecter California Custom 5. Alder J body, 35" scale 5-string with quilt top. Pickups are EMG P and J soapbars, but they will easily interchange with any of the EMG soapbars through quick-connect and there are some that will get you in the ballpark of the MM sound. There are probably even passive MM-style humbuckers that will fit in the same routes.

If you can find one, that is. They didn't make them for very long. However, when they do come up, it's usually for $400 or less, so you have plenty of room for modding. They really do sound and play great, although mine's a bit heavy and a bit neck-heavy.

Basically what most of these guys are saying is that you're going to be pretty hard pressed to find a bass with both a jazz style body and dual MM pups however there are plenty of other options.

A company that I know for sure has made a few "MM Jazz basses" is Sandberg but I can't remember seeing any for sale recently. There is however a JM (jazz pup at the neck MM at the bridge) for sale on ebay atm:

If you don't mind going passive you can always get a used Fender Roscoe Beck 5 string and run it in full humbucker mode.Should be able to find one for under $ 1,500 easily.

Totally forgot about the RBV! I actually replied to this thread with the intent of suggesting one but forgot as I was typing, lol. There is actually one in the classifieds right now for $1050 shipped i think. If you want it grab it quick because they don't last very long.

There are probably several custom luthiers who could get you in at that number.

Try Tom Clement. According to clementbass.com His prices for a 5er start at $1350 so if you dont go wild with options, you're right there. He does 2 different Jazz body styles and as long as you use a standard body shape, there's no upcharge.
You'll be looking at an add-on for the second pickup but if you stay with passive electronics, you should be right in the ballpark. Unless you already have a spare preamp lying around that he can install for you
All handmade-I own one and I wish I had the $$ to order another. He uses all Hipshot hardware and his standard pickups are Nordys.
