I'm looking for Mike Dirnt's "Longview" sound. What EQ setting should I use?

my amp has standard controls.

you knowm just hi, low , mid. and shape.

thats it lol.

i play a p bass with seymour duncan alnico 5 pickups.

your bass/pups sound like something he'd use.

the only advice I can really give, is to train your ear...

in a gigging situation, you'll find that you'll need to adjust your settings, 'lest you want to play with an inferior tone (which will make you feel very very self conscious).

I'm really gassing for his bass, although, I already own 2 P-basses

the p bass is, the essential bass.

its amazing.

the thing is, i know i can get a similar sound by cutting highs and lows and boosting mids, but its honky.

any other setting, and the strings just dont sound "loose"

Playing with a pick is important, if you're not already doing that.

PLay with a pick and if your bass has 2 pickups use the one close to the bridge. He has a very bright sound on that album. I believe he used a Ripper in some of those songs.

Leave your amp flat and maybe boost some high-mids or highs a bit.

keep your low and high control flat, then a slight boost in your low and high mids.






say you have a 7-band EQ....


First one flat, boost second one, slightly less boost on 3rd, flat on 4th, match 5th to 3rd, match 6 to 2nd, and 7 to flat.

On the record you're hearing a lot of Evil Twin DI, which has a shelving boost at (I think) 2khz. That and an Ampeg SVT.

Dirnt's P-bass pick tone really lives in that band. Though I don't think he used a P on that album.

sorry to bump 12 years after the fact but Mike used a rental Precision Bass Plus since his grabber was broken at the time. He turned the jazz pickup basically off and he boosted the 2k. I believe the only song he didnt use the p-bass on was Longview, which was recorded with a Kramer. I believe the Kramer 250b
