I'm screwed!

Short story: The professor hasn't specified what to study for the midterm.

Welcome to engineering school. It doesn't get any easier (or more straightforward) after this.

I can't think of anything better to write than what etoncrow already has:

Engineering studies teach you a certain way of thinking more than memorizing information. They also teach you how to work under stress. The best you can do is not get stressed out and remember that you are in the same situation as all of your peers. Keep your head and compete.

Pretty good actually, I have a year and a half before I'm a Petroleum Engineer.

That's like saying "this textbook is no good - it's got more answers in it than the one I need!" It also shows why you might be finding the course too challenging.

Let me get this straight - you're at University reading Mech Eng, right? So you need to learn and understand engineering principles and be able to apply them in a broad range of contexts, yes? Or is your course just designed to enable you to answer questions about pre-specified aspects of engineering related to compressed air powered vehicles?

It sounds to me like your professor is setting high standards for students by expecting them to know their subject and apply it in any context they might encounter.

Remember, helping motivated students to acquire genuine proficiency within the subject is just one half of your professor's job. The other half is to maintain academic standards - in other words, flush out students who want an easy ride by coasting through the course with minimal effort, so that he can fail them. All too often students expect their professor to do the first half uncritically and fail to understand the professor's responsibilities for the second aspect. It sounds like he's doing a good job.

This is how my math professor described Calculus the first day of class. He considered it a 'weeding out' course for people who wanted to continue in mathematics. If you can't hack Calc I you definitely won't be ready for anything beyond it.

I don't mean to sound rude, but why and how did You choose Mechanical Engineering?

Nearly half of my classmates had NO idea about mechanics and various mechanical designs or manufacturing processes when we started. Half of us did ;).

Their way was to either drop out, change to some other department, cheat, buy, bribe or STUDY, STUDY, STUDY.

Fortunately most of them chose the last ones. It wasn't easy for them, far from that. I helped and even tutored quite a few who were (and still are) way ahead of me in math and physics, but were useless in designs, whether construction or manufacturing.

Absolutely true. We had great professors, who helped us in any way to become good engineers, not just the average paper shuffling no-goods-in-anything-really. If that ment to force people to re-evaluate their chosen path, they did just that.

Never once they gave us the straight answer to a broad question, but always gave us text-books from their own private libraries, or told us where to get them. If they felt that the material was something even one student could use in the future, they ordered it to the poly library.

Every engineering problem can and should be divided to sub-problems and the solution to the similar ones is usually, yes You guessed that right, the same.

And yes I have a Bachelors degree in Mechanical Engineering.

no offence but, they take mech eng because they want to know more about it and want to start a career in the field because they find it interesting.

Its like asking, why take bass lessons when you dont know how a bass works or what its made of.

Non taken, but Ive seen too many bad academic desicions in my life to just let this one slip by. From the answers OP's been giving, I'd say that he may have chosen the wrong field of education.

Somehow I find Your analogy amusing, taken the amount of (newbie) posts in amps, setup/repair and luthiers corner.

An understanding is in this case necessary, not just obedience ;).

On the first day of my ECE 280 (Circuit Analysis) course the professor walked in and set his brief case down. Then he said, "Hello, I am *******, 25% of you are going to fail. That does not include those of you who will not move on because they receive a D."

The entire class was stunned; that's not something you want to hear on the first day of classes. We were already worried because the subject matter is incredibly tough.

Then he began to lecture and out of no-where he asks "how many of you have read chapter 3?" .....what?! it's the first day of classes and we're already supposed to have read chapter 3? ***!

Needless to say I've been spending about 2-3 hours a day (everyday) on this crap.

T-bird, what I find amusing is that you actually looked through my profile to find my "newbie" posts (not even threads). Couldn't think of anything to say, so you thought you'd dig around to get some "background information"? OK!

PS. of course I have "newbie" posts in those categories, I mean, that's what this forum's all about isn't it? Informing your average "newbie" on bass related topics including amps, setup/repair and construction. If that is related to me gathering some more tips (my original intent when posting in this thread) regarding first year mech eng, let me know. Pm or e-mail, or reply, either is fine.

And don't mess with my analogy! Coming from myself or a big-shot poster, its valid.
