I'm sick of my Ampeg

No matter how I set my ampeg, I always get one of three sounds, dark and mellow, slightly brighter (not by much), or something terrible. I'm looking for something that doesn't break the bank, but can turn my sg reissue with flats from a groove machine to a slap n popper in an instant (and don't say this isn't possible as my crap practice 'drive' combo can do it no problem). I'm looking for something relatively cheap (preferably a combo if need be), any suggestions?

Maybe I am just bitter but I just returned two Ampeg combos that did not work out of the box. The 210SP had two effects that didn't work, and the 115BAHPT had a blown sub out of the box. My GK Backlines build quality exceeds Ampegs combos by far. My little 100w 12" with a busted input jack has competed with two 120w 2x12 guitar amps, and a drummer for a very long time now. If you can spare the extra money I'd go with one of the Fender Bassman 250's.

well, by looking at your profile, you have pretty much one of the lowest end Ampegs.

Those amps have never been known for great sound or quality. I put it basically with the B series heads/cabinets, it's for people who want the name but wont pay for the quality.

I have a feeling you would have a very different feeling if you played through the true (tube) SVT.

Well yeah, I'm talking about the combos myself. Since it seems the OP is talking about combos himself. GK's Backline is also their lowest quality amplifier they make... and I definitely got more than I paid for.

If you are right, it is Ampeg that is sticking its name on an inferior product, and the poster has every right to say "Ampegs make inferior products." If Ampeg doesn't want to be tarnished by its non'"true (tube) SVT" products, it should make them under another name.

What keeps you from just playing through the "crap practice drive combo" if it does everything you need 'no problem'?

Every rehearsal studio I go to has these Ampeg SVT's which, according to all these forums I read here, are supposed to be the shizz-nizzle. They are ablsolute crap!! I just played with one tonight. I thought I would futz with it because everyone here talks so highly of them. Thank God I brought my GK head. Night and day sound. GK is the only amp there is in my book.

Everybody makes a "cheap" version, Mercedes, Jaguar and Ampeg, The combos, especialy the 210 with built in effects is nothing more than a high powered practise amp. The B series, especialy the b1 and b2 are "entry" level and still dern good. If you can get that out of a GK, then good on ya mate. You saved a buck.

I think the point here is that the OP is saying that he can'rt make an Ampeg work for his desired sound, and he is being told by the contibuters that it ain't the amp.

I kinda agree with the OP. I personally have never cared for their sound. It`s funny, I remember growing up and seeing so many bassists using Ampegs(even before I knew what they were) and I was always so impressed by their tones. Once I tried them out though I could never get a Flea, Wooten, Timmy C, Bootsy, etc... sound. After more research I found that many of those players either record DI, use different amps in studio, or use so many effects that the amp alone almost becomes irrelevant to their tone.
You can argue that I wouldn`t sound like them anyways because I`m not them and I would somewhat agree, however, there`s not even a ballpark of similarity IME and IMHO.

**Also, I realize that those players have used various amps throughout their years, however, at one point or another they had used them.
