Used basses are a much better value. I don't know how old you are but if my mom would have been willing to drop $950 for a bass for me I would have been very grateful! There are so many choices in the under $1000 range. If you go used you will have even more. If you are set on a new bass maybe go with a MIM P bass to save your mom some cash and spend a bit on upgrading it if you feel the need. I would also recommend a Fender Geddy Lee jazz bass if you want a nice new bass. These are in the $900 range new and are MIJ.

If you still have a Musician's Friend catalog from a month or two ago, with the old prices, I believe you can still get those prices till the end of the month. In the fine print somewhere it says, "Sale prices good thru DATE X." I believe the catalog that expires on 3/31/09 still had the old prices for Fenders. You'll have to order by phone, but they'll give you the old price. But you need to actually have the catalog; they'll ask you for some number off it.

Ok... I'll be realistic and honest.

If your moms buying it you should feel fortunate that she's willing to spend $950!

Have some gratitude for what you CAN have rather than moaning and complaining about what you think you 'could' have had.

She could be like many other parents and be looking at SX starter kits.

Appreciate what you got, or get. Someday you'll have to buy it yourself.

Two words:

1). Used.

2). G&L.

Or a used Lakland anything will make you forget all about that Fender. The best basses I've ever owned tended to be 'used'. Basses are not 'used' like a car or a boat is 'used' - just played a few more times. In fact, it's often hard to evaluate a 'new' bass, because many of them are set up so badly from the factory - Fender is notorious for this. What you REALLY need to do is spend a few months playing a lot of basses.

I would've been lucky if my folks had given me 95 bucks to buy any bass back when I was a kid. Both of my parents were of the ' You want it? Well get off your butt and go get a job and save up for it!', school of thought. With that said, the OP should kiss his mom for her generousity, and start looking hard at what you can still get for 950 bucks. I'd definitely be shopping around on the used market as a lot of private sellers and even music stores need to move inventory that's been hanging around this rescession, so I have to second the notion that others have already suggested.

This post really annoys me.

Your mom will only buy a $1000 bass? Poor you!

Go whine about it somewhere else.

+1000 I already posted on this, but in retrospect I should've said what I really think...

you sound like a BRAT.

A lot like the other rich kids back in my high school who bought a PRS cause no one else could afford one and then it spent it's life under a bed.

IME all my peers who bought rich kid instruments never amounted to anything musically, because they had no appreciation for what they played

:spit:

When I was 15 years old my dad took me to a music store to buy my first bass. I wanted a Rickenbacker, since Paul McCartney played one! I saw a red wine colored Rick and said 'That one!" We asked how much, it was $300 (mind you, this was 1978!) and my dad said, "I'll sign to finance it, but YOU get a part time job and pay for it." Which I did.

If your mom is buying you a first bass, honestly, you should get something a little closer to a $300 Epiphone or something like that, IMO.

If you want a $1500 bass, get a job and buy one.

Do you still have it?

It's your mother's money, and a lot of parents couldn't or wouldn't pony up a grand for an instrument for their children. If you can get the same bass for less money just because it's been played a while (and may have a few scratches), maximize her generosity now, and buy new stuff when you're out on your own. Just my opinion.

Ok... I'll be realistic and honest.

first of all thanks to everyone who has helped and to everyone thats been calling me a brat just wanna let you guys know ive saved up $800 of my own and my mom shall just add the rest but she does not want me spending too much on a bass thats why she said she would only add $200 more to my savings.....just wanna clear that up to everyone calling me a brat so basically i saved up for it!

That still doesn't totally save you from bratdom: you're still angry at your mom, who still is willing to GIVE you 200.

Nah, I'm joking. Is a great thing that you saved your money. Maybe a good medium range bass could be the thing for you. Think Spector, Schecter (the new ones are being very loved right now), some Yamaha... I insist in my question: Must it be a fender? Really?? Then I trow another question: How long have you been playing bass? And yet another: Is it your first bass??

this could get ugly...

anyway, look out for a used MIA fender. Theres nothing wrong with a used instrument. Think about it, even if you had bought it new, as soon as it leaves the store, it's used.

Kudos for saving up. You're still lucky, I had to nag my parents for months before they would me spend MY OWN $300 on my MIM P.
