So, in a lot of threads lately, in both Edge and Firefox browsers on my PC, and on my Galaxy S20+ phone, instead of an actual pic I'm seeing "".

Clearly other users are seeing the images, because they are reacting to them.

What does this mean? What sort of image viewing is all of my devices missing?

In this case, the images must have been taken down on Facebook after several tbers replied. There is no image at Invalid Link Removed

Yes sir.
As Paul did, try going to the image directly and see if it's there in first place. Linking to images on other websites has an element of risk since the website hosting the image can take the image down or modify the link at any time.
