Flatted 7th, aka Pentatonic. At A, twice, at B, twice, with C twice then chromatic to the octave. Not suggesting this is good advice, it's just how I think of it. This is a lick, by the way, that, in my old age I have to play at least every other day.
What about this song is giving you trouble? The chorus run sounds very much like the kind of thing that influenced Flea, and he used to do a lot of similarly-phrased runs back in the early days. If it's a matter of speed I'd woodshed the line as written because it's probably not any more technical than RHCP's trickier tunes. Plus it's a great line to know, and whenever rearranging a song I think you should always start by fully understanding the original before you start making changes.
The run under the chorus definitely has a major third. If I were asking "What else would fit an RHCP vibe here?" I might try pedaling the root under those changes but plucking really hard, like some of the lines from the BSSM era when he was really digging in.
