Impossible question!

I was calling him to express my frustration that I could not control the monitor mix that I was hearing in the monitors. The issue turned out to be that the Mackie mixer we were using didn't have enough "auxilary sends" to be able to control the specific instrument/vocal levels that I needed at my monitor. "Pro" mixers have 2, 4, 6, 8, etc. "auxilary sends" so that each monitor can have it's own mix.

All of the other issues like power handling and main speakers can be worked out ala carte.

Same here. In my acoustic trio, I actually run a copy of the main mix to the monitors. It works fine for that. In other bands, I typically put the vocals on top with enough of everything else for people to get their cues.

Well, I am not that picky monitor wise, neither are my 2 band mates, but I can tell you that if you refused to provide more than one monitor mix we wouldn't be HIRING you.

My question would be whether the limitation was equipment related. If there's only one AUX send, then he can't. If it would mean digging out a cable or two and he won't do it, that's a horse of a different color.

I would get a presonus studio live mixer, a couple of qsc k12s and kw181 sub for FOH and 2-4 k10s for monitors. The presonus is a one box live solution that you can also multitrack record from, with up to 6 aux sends. The qsc powered stuff sounds great and is compact. You could substitute the studio live for a mackie 1608 and the qsc kit for some cheaper powered speakers you may have where you live, like the EVs which I can't get
