Double Bass In a Sentimental Mood

In the real book version the voice leading in the 1st 4 bars gives you the descending bass part
Changes= Dm Dm(#7)|Dm7 Dm6|Gm Gm (#7)|Gm7 Gm6|
bass half notes D C# |C B |G F# | F E |
This is a pretty common bass figure and notation on Ellington and other tunes from that period.

Hope Springs Eternal.
Here is a sketch of the basic harmony.
I'm not a big fan of the (often used) D,C#,C,B chromatic descending bass line in m. 1 & 2 of the A sections. That line is shown as an "inner voice" in the harmony, NOT as a bassline in the published sheet music.
(It is also a "long walk off of a short pier", as it doesn't lead strongly to the Gmin chord in m.3 & 4. IMFO.)
Thanks.

I really like the "long walk off of a short pier" metaphor. I've always felt the same about that tune. Funny Valentine, too.
