More realistically:

Some sort of sniper rifle with scope and silencer (for picking off lone zombies who are getting too close for comfort to my hideout)

AK-47 or some variant thereof. Reliable and powerful.

Shotgun, semi-auto preferably, but pump-action would do as well (for close range... why use a pistol when I have a shotgun? It can also be used as a club).

As for a melee weapon... either a mace (not a morning star with their ridiculously long spikes that'll get stuck, just a mace with short spikes or flanges), war hammer or axe. I'm not much for subtlety. The good thing about either a war hammer or axe is that both can double as handy dandy tools for hideout fortification/maintenance.

As for where to go... my house is actually quite easily fortified. Its first floor is pretty high up off the ground, so would just need to lock the doors and block off a couple windows. It's also got a second floor and a full attic (with a ladder that can be retracted).

Or I could go out in the country somewhere, or steal a boat and go out to the Farallons. This is, of course, assuming old school Romero type zombies. If the zombies are the ones from 28 Days Later, I might be screwed.

The thing is, regarding hat you said about shotgun vs. pistol for close range, unless you saw off some of the shotgun's barrel, it will be extremely cumbersome indoors. That is where a pistol will really shine. Also, considering the size of ammo, if I had to chosse between shotgun and pistol, I'd probably choose pistol, as the smaller ammo will let me carry many more rounds.

If they're getting that close to me I've already screwed up royally anyway and would start using melee weapons. Also, I have a saw.

Using basses as clubs.... hmmm... a BC Rich might get stuck, though...
