Inca Silver Musicman Stingray

How much would you pay for an all original 1979 Inca Silver Musicman Stingray?

I see them as high as $4,000. Is that way out of line, when you can get a really nice natural finish 1979 for $2,900.

I have an opportunity to pick one up tonight, but don't know if the rarity of the color is worth such a large price jump.

Entirely up to the purchaser but when you're talking rarity, you're talking basses in the very low if not single hundred for Inca Silver compared with thousands if not well over 10000 regular pre EB Stingrays in natural, sunburst, black and white (and walnut).

So they're super rare and if in original and top class condition they will no doubt command the price. I seem to remember there are two versions and one has a tendency to go a little greenish in colour with age (like white turns cream). I had the opportunity to buy an immaculate, as new one in OHSC about 15 yrs ago and kick myself I didn't at the time.

I’m a total stingray junkie, this one is so clean the silver still has a shine to it. It was very well cared for. It had the volume pot replaced at some point, but comes with an original ‘79 volume pot. It’s a bass I think I will regret not picking up.

I borrowed one from a friend I have who owns about 120 different guitars. His house is nuts with cool instruments but, they don’t get played. Nor do they get much care. He has an extensive pre-CBS Jazzmaster collection. I’m talking probably 15-20 of those alone.

Upon inspection of this pre-EB Stingray, there was some respray on the neck (to cover wear on the back. Logo & headstock looked true) & I think the body was either refinished or somehow sprayed in part.

I’m just inherently a Fender tone guy and the bass overall didn’t really KO me. It was cool to look at.

He probably still has it. That bass probably hasn’t seen daylight since I borrowed it some 5-7 years ago.

It’s amazing when guys have collections just to collect. I love to play these basses. I have everything from $6,000 MTDs that I gig and a 20 year old Stingrays that I gig.

I pulled the trigger on it at $3,500. I haven't seen the bass yet, and when it arrives I will have 7 days to get a refund if its not as described. But he tells me the silver still has a nice shine to it and hasn't really turned green yet and it also has one of best quality preamps he's seen on a '79.

I can't wait for it to get here.

As soon as I get the bass tomorrow Ill be cool with sharing the serial number. Its not like its my ssn. I never understand why guys are so anal hiding sn and even license plate numbers. Mine is on my car and its parked outside all day long.
