Inexpensive Jazz Bass

Wanting to add a Fender Jazz Bass to the mix and was trying to decide between standard jazz bass MIM or Squier model. Any suggestions since I don’t want to spend a lot of money

Not to shove another brand at ya, but have you tried the Vintage Guitars brand? I have one of these and the guys in the band are loving it. I'm a touring musician and this thing is amazing. I also A/B'd it against a 74 jazz bass and it sounds better. They're easy on the wallet as well. I'd recommend anyone giving it a shot that's looking for a j-bass.

Just go used with whichever you buy and pick one that you like the sound and looks of.

If you want to buy new, can I highly recommend that you consider a Tribute JB-2? Under $400 shipped with MF's usual 15% discount. They also regularly have open box ones for about $350.

The Squier Vintage Modified series are very nice. I owned one briefly and was impressed with the sound and playability.

I’ve bought, played, and sold several Fender JBs over the years - MIA,MIM,and MIJ.

Last JB I bought and still cuuently have is a Squier Classic Vibe 60s model in the Inca Silver finish. I bought it on a lark from Sweetwater to check it out after I heard so many good things about that particular model. And to my surprise it’s probably the third best JB I ever played. Pretty sweet for the $350 I paid for it.

Could be luck of the draw. But for whatever reason, it’s a really nice JB. Got a friend who’s an absolute fanatic when it comes to JBs. He owns several vintage models and is a walking history book on those basses. And even he (somewhat grudgingly) conceded my CV Squier is a very fine example of a JB in terms of tone and playability.

interesting, I've never known anybody to have owned several of any one particular instrument, but if all of yours haven't sounded like a JB then what would you describe them as?

i currently own three Lakland 44-64 customs all set up exactly the same...just different colors...

I'm sure you're little league in that manner compared to some, you gotta do what makes you happy or fills a need. I want 2 of everything as well for different strings / tunings / fingerboards etc. but ''several'' sounds beyond reason if not on the road with the Rolling Stones. but hey, we're consumers! there are many different basses I still want and gotta get the neck on my old BASS V straightened and some like my Power J and amps worked on, so I haven't compounded my load with more of the same. we all got our priorities. why do you have ''three Lakland 44-64 customs all set up exactly the same''? just for visual enjoyment of the colors, or beyond that legit reason?

I bought a CV 70's Precision, and it is great. If I were you, I'd look at a used G&L Tribute JB-2,though.(I own one) The quality is better than the Fender MIM and the Squier CV or VM series. Not that I'm bashing them(I think they are a very good value) ,but the Tribute JB-2 is better. There is one on Reverb.com right now! $320. Make a lower offer to whittle down the the shipping cost.

I hate having to decide which bass to play on any given occasion when i go out on stage...so this way they are all basically the same...(one in white, one in black, and one in natural wood grain) this way it really doesn't matter which one i grab as they all sound basically the same...that way if a string breaks or whatever i'm covered and i don't have to reset the amp or any of my pedals to match the output of a different bass

that model is passive as in no preamp, much like most jazz basses are.

You've got a lot of choices for a good Jazz bass, just depends on your budget and what particulars you may be looking for. Best to go to a music store and try as many out, Fender, Squier, G&L, Bacchus and unfortunately, you may not find a Sire to try out as only a few stores are authorized distributors. ,most people just order these online, however they're pretty awesome basses for the money (cheapest jazz is $329 and it's both passive and active, I'd personally take it over a Tribute. Oh heck, just buy them all.
