Double Bass Influences

School Days is the reason I picked up the bass - Stanley Clarke

My Funny Valentine/4 and More is the album that first got me excited about jazz - Ron Carter.

Cannonball and Coltrane was my first big transcription project - Paul Chambers

Oscar Peterson Trio Live at the London House made me leave a day late for vacation once - Ray Brown

Fred Hersch Live at the Village Vanguard was stuck in my cd player for year - Drew Gress

Footsteps of Our Fathers reminded me what swing was. Eric Revis

+1 to Drew Gress on that album

+ Infinity - Drew Gress is on a 1996 recording called "Second Look" - (pianist) Marc Copeland's Quartet with John Abercrombie and Billy Hart.
He always seems to be part of beautiful music...As much as I enjoy his bass playing, I always seem to enjoy the projects he's involved in even more.
Thanks.

Charles Mingus, Charlie Haden, Scott LaFaro, Ray Brown, and Paul Chambers have been my biggest influences lately. Mingus, Charlie, and LaFaro totally turned my heads with their own unique radical approaches to the bass, but still were masters in laying down a solid foundation. Ray Brown and PC are the epitome of groove, enough said. Also, Miles Davis has lately been a big inspiration in my solos. Transcribing his solo on So What was pure joy.

That one was in my car (back when I had one) for well over a year. Would always wind up putting it in for the drive home after playing with a group that was light years from sounding like that quartet did. I listened to it a lot....

Early on it was definitely Mingus, Charlie Haden, Gary Peacock. Ray Brown then kind of took over for 10 yrs along with Sam Jones, Wilbur Ware, Doug Watkins, Butch Warren, Teddy Kotick, NHOP. Lately Drew Gress, Dave Holland, Dave Green.
