This happened in 2003:
four days before leaving on tour I was out with my guitar player and after a few too many drinks at the bar we decided to go play some hacky sack at the park with a six pack. At the park, which is right by the river there is a train bridge... Me, acting like an idiot, jumped up to swing by the girder that hung just within grasp.
I made it, but my hands slipped...all except for the ring finger on my plucking hand. The ring got caught on the edge of the girder and all 200 lbs pulled down on the ring. The flesh all pulled off my finger around the entire circumference of my ring.
A trip to the hospital, where they cut off my ring, carefully stitched all the way around my finger and told me that I had a severe sprain.
Well, long story short... I went on tour and in due time my finger healed, but the first couple of weeks of gigs were pretty rough.
