There is a HUGE difference in volume and low end reproduction between the WT550 and WT800 run at 4ohms (i.e., the WT550 into a 4ohm cab and the WT800 bridged into an 8 ohm cab).

I would think once you get to comparing 2ohm operation of the WT550 (700 watts or so) with the 4ohm bridged operation of the newer WT800 (1100 watts I believe.. basically the WT800 running 2ohms per side), the difference would be less, since you are at such a high absolute wattage level with each one.

That being said, as posted above, cabinet SPL and tone preference (i.e., tight and punchy versus big and boomy) can easily make 500 watts more than enough or not even close, depending on how loud you play.

I don't play out much, but I have played my WT550 through a 4 Ohm Schroeder 1212 and an 8 Ohm Schro 115 outdoors on a riverbank. No problems with power, volume or overheating at all. Unless you're running inefficient cabs or are playing enormous stages I can't imagine the 550 not being enough.

let me start by saying the cab i will be using is an "ineffecient" cab. it's an ampeg 610hlf. that is until i trade up for an eden 410/210 rig which will run at 2ohms.

i like tight punchy bass, with a nice round bottom. i don't need massive low end. i need a good sounding amp that i can get nice lows from and cut through with ease. as i've grown older i've learned it's not all about me, but all about the overall sound.

most venues we play are small and do not offer pa support. larger bars and clubs i would have the ability to do direct so the bigger venues aren't really my concern.

IME, the cab makes a huge difference in output. I've never needed all that my SVT-III could dish out, but I always ran it into an Eden 410 @ 4 ohms. That head/cab was significantly louder than the Ampeg 410HE that I started with.

Just sold my SVT-III, and now I'm starting to suffer from some Eden GAS pains myself.

as soon as my 4 pro is gone that is exactly what i am going to do. already pm'd him about it.


you know, my 3 pro was completely underpowered but i was running it with a 610hlf and an 810e so that leads me to believe that was the reason. i got by with 450 watts, so 500 shouldnt be a problem. especially when i upgrade to a better cab.

I run my wt-550 into a 210xst plus a 210xlt at 2ohms. That's plenty of volume and tone for any setting I can imagine without PA support. With PA support it doesn't really matter. In retrospect, however, I think I'd prefer to run it into a bigger cab with a nice high sensitivity rating at 4ohms--the additional speaker area ought to more than compensate for the inconsequentially lower wattage running the wt-550 at 4ohms. In fact, I'm about to purchase an Aggie gs412 for that reason--it's overkill, but I can't resist. I'd say that unless you really need the additional options that the wt-800 provides, the wt-550 with the right cab is all you'll need in terms of power/volume.

ok, i'm not an expert on the 800 by any stretch. I've had my 550 for 2-3 years. I heard the 800 ONCE in the store next to a 550 hooked up to the same cab, playing a mild store volumes. my impression, at that volume, is that the 800 was more commanding, exciting to listen to. I don't know what it would do cranked up, but with my other experience of eden world tour products I would not be suprised at all if the 800 performs spectacularly and different than other models.

not tryin' to pick a fight here...

I've played wt300, wt400, wt405, wt330, wtx260, wt550, wt800. you can't tell me that you honestly think the ONLY differences in the 800 is a better compressor and balance knob?? why is it bigger than the 550? for the compressor circuit?? its for the OTHER amp section and possibly higher quality amp components??

cool, just looked up the 800b owners manual and it says the amp runs 300@8ohms, 440@4 and 550@2 (typo??) in dual mono and 880@8, 1100@4 bridged.

so, I guess I was listening to 880 into 8ohms vs. 300w into 8ohms (wt550) that would be a 580w difference.

so, YES I heard a difference :hiding:

At this piont, I would recommend holding out for the WTX500. I would also think, if you're playing venues that need more than 500 watts, you would likely be reinforcing with a sound system anyhow (if not, its worth considering). I'm pushing less than 400 watts stage volume with my Nemmy NA650 and a single 12" in a 5 piece rock band and don't have any problem being heard on stage.

Dude, sorry... didnt mean to rile anybody up. Notes made and taken. I "presumed" we were talking an 800A or B.. the newest model definitely has 1100 watts bridged into 4 ohms, a LARGE difference. I only represented this company for 5 years and owned every amp you listed except for the 405 (and the latest version of the upgraded 800).... my perception was for the weight difference in 550/800 and a total power difference of 50 watts (at the time) I was better served with the 550. The dual amps, better compressor, more intricate eq system all played into the larger / heavier 800 'box'. I'm not slighting the 800 or Eden... I was just giving my opinion on a great product.

yeah it's all a matter of what i can get my hands on. i have the chance at a 550 but i might also have the chance to swing an 800 for the same price.

from the eden guys, b and c will go 1100 into 4ohms. which is my big concern since i have a 4ohm cab. plus if i need to use just one of the amps for a smaller setting, i can do so as well. it's more options. with the 550 i would ultimately have to upgrade cabs to get the most out of it. with the 800 i won't have to do that for awhile.

the 6lb difference isn't a huge difference for twice the power at 4 ohms. it's really all a matter of what i can get my hands on.

An 800 for the same price is a very good deal. One of the Edenites that owns nearly as much gear as the factory swears by his 800... says he carries 2 - 400's, so he always has a spare. There's a lot to be said for that too!!

I've played the MH600; which I *think* is the same as the wt550's hybrid side-or pretty close-and was "underwhelmed" when comparing it to my wt800B.
The extra headroom of the 800 adds a lot of heft, and dynamic range to my ear.

If it were me, I'd much rather have the 800 (as long as it's a B or C model).
