Interesting...

I just picked up a used Squier Jazz bass @ a pawn shop today for $100. I'm looking to use it primarily for fly-in gigs. Anyway, it's got a nice metallic candy apple red finish, good feeling neck, etc.. I changed out the crappy small "Affinity" tuners for some more substantial ones. Etc, blah....

Here's what I though was interesting.... the body is solid alder, and it doesn't have a "swimming pool" route. It is routed pretty much like a 62 would be routed, with the pickups individually routed and no rectangle route or routed wiring channel. I wasn't aware that they had made these like that. Anyway, I guess I'm gonna rock it "sans pickguard".

Good looking bass, surprisingly good sounding too now that I put flats on it.

I'd take pics, but my cameras batteries are dead, and I can't find my battery charger. I'll try to get some pics up asap though.

Not a bad buy for $100

My first Jazz was a Squier I got off ebay, shipped, for $100. It had the rectangle route, but not the wiring channel. I used it without a pickguard for a while. It had a nicer neck than my MIM I bought shortly after it.

BnB

Yeah, it just struck me as "odd" that this one was solid alder and routed like a 62...no rectangle route (or channel). Really surprised me.

They do have surprisingly comfortable necks.

It'll make a nice "fly in" gig bass, so I don't have to bring my vintage or more valuable stuff.

Here's a pic so that you guys can see the route. It really surprised me to see a Squier routed like this - (looked good, so I removed the guard...)

Looks great DH! I would've gone for the matching headstock to give it a little flare, but it turned out great!

I probably will do a matching stock just for the hell of it (Metal Specks Red seems like it should match pretty well), but I fly to Portland with Ray Wylie this week...so I just wanted to make sure it was "giggable". Of course I'll probably just bring a Longhorn Bass instead.....

:)
