I have a 2i2 and for practicing along to songs I usually don’t even open my DAW. I just setup the focusrite to be my primary audio device so everything I do on my computer comes out of the 2i2. And I can plug my bass DI right into the front of the 2i2 and can adjust the mix to sound balanced by raising or lowering the volume on YouTube and tweaking the monitoring volume on the 2i2 for overall volume. For example if your basses volume is too low compared to the YouTube video lower the volume on YouTube and then turn up the monitor volume on the 2i2. But yeah there’s a lot of videos on YouTube that don’t have bass or are specifically altered to be used as a bass backing track. Like this
if I’m practicing my pocket playing along to drum loops I actually just pull up kontact. I use Getgood drums and they have a built in groove player so you get a couple packs of midi grooves for free and then they sell additional ones from big name players. For example I have Chris Allison the Drummer from Plinis groove pack.
I really only mess with my DAW(reaper) if I’m actually recording something. And if I’m recording bass to a song Like that I do what others have mentioned and just put the song into a stereo track and add a mono track for my bass signal.
If I want to record Audio and video I do something that’s kind of ghetto. I run the 2 outputs on the back of the 2i2 to the two inputs on a zoom Q8. It’s kind of ghetto but i prefer doing that over having to edit separate audio and video together. Just more of a workflow preference I guess. Basically the zoom has a screen and headphone out so I can check out what I’ve recorded and if I’m happy I just take the memory card out of the zoom, pop it into the computer and all I have to do is cut off the beginning and end of the video so it doesn’t show me walking up to the camera to hit record.
