I know there's lots of us here who were campers or acadamy kids back in the day. Heck, there may be academy kids on here right now!

General call out. Year, ensemble if you will, funny yarns.

Me first:

IAC 96, 97, WYSO, Jazz band 1.

In 96 one of the deviant female campers realized that a bass case was the perfect size for smuggling signs from all over campus. Also the summer we took all the light bulbs out of the tuba hut...

There is also the legend from the 60's about David Ruby tearing the fingerboard off one of those awful aluminum basses and rowing into the lake on it. He personally confirmed this one to me years ago!

Well I obviously know you, doubler... time to reveal the mask! (PM me if you want). I was at the camp in 95 and 96 (wyso).

Too many good memories to list. And almost too sad to mention that they tore down the bass hut recently (30+ years of bassist's names were written on those walls...)

Can't believe only two replies. At least we were all in WYSO...

Steve, what was the rep this summer? Any high points? I was actually up there for a couple days and gave the jazz bassist from the top band a lesson. Have you got his contact info? Good player from Michigan, but due to the current faculty stance on jazz, I think I gave him his only bass lesson all summer.:scowl:

IAC 2000. WYSO.

I think the year before I went there some people floated one of those aluminum basses out onto the lake with candles on it.

The highlight of the concerts that season was the side-by-side concert with the Detroit Symphony. Robert Gladstone lead the section and Neeme Jarvi conducted. Great concert.

I was shocked to find out it's only 6 weeks now. And there's no more challenges! The kids were just laying around campus... I did see some people practicing, though. Not many. I talked to some staff and they mentioned that the camp is moving towards a different philosophy, more feel good, all encompassing. Even the addition of the World Youth Choir... What the heck is that? There's only one World Youth ensemble out there, as far as I'm concerned.:rollno:

yeah, I agree. Although I didn't attend the 8 week session, the 6 week is a little relaxed and not as boot camp liked as I would've liked. I also heard that the musicianship in WYSO has also gone down, although we did dominate the Mahler this summer :smug:

IAC 2003 and 2004, classical guitar ensemble and early music ensemble. What an awesome place.

They also got rid of the early music ensemble. I played renaissance lute along with all 3 sized gambas, renaissance guitars, period recorders, and singers. We had our final recital in the church (can't remember the name of the building) and it was packed; people were standing in the entrance to check us out! And then they cancelled the early music program the next year... one of the things that made Interlochen so unique, IMO.

Can't say I cared for the food much.

EDIT: upon rereading my post -- I only played lute, not all of those instruments....

steve haha, i was your stand partner for don juan! i didnt know you had a talk bass, i got screwed on the mahler, but at least i got brahms 1 and don juan, i guess i got enrique batiz as well. I was there in 2006 and 2007. WYSO for six weeks in 2006 and principal for 1. I was in WYSO for 3 weeks this year. We continued the tradition of signing the first stand folder! steve you coming back to work next year?
