Inverter vs. Roland BA-330

What are your needs? How loud and how big an area you need to cover?

It's going to be hard to have a lot of bass outdoors out of any of the smaller packages. Running on 8 AA batteries? Hmmm. I'm sure it'll sound nice, but I am not sure you'll have enough juice at reasonable levels for long enough.

I can tell you what I use... but my needs may be more humble than what you're after, I don't know. I play with this ska/reggae/funk band that sometimes goes out busking in summer, mostly in a couple of parks around here, and also at the promenade by the beach, where every last weekend in August there's a buskers free for all (but with some moderate organisation) and can be a lot of fun.
We have horns (1-2 trumpets, sax, trombone sometimes), three guitars using Roland Cubes, drummer playing hi-hats and a snare, sometimes a small (small!) bass drum, and 1 main vocalist... with two additional microphones if we can be bothered.

Horns and drums are purely acoustic. Guitars go through the Roland Cubes. For bass, I have been using a small "portable PA" (yeah, that's what they call it but...), a QTX QR10PA. It's small, they claim 100W, take it with a pinch of salt, but whatever it is it works well for us, and battery life is at least 3-4 hours. It claims 8 hours, and when new I may have got close but I never pushed it that hard without recharging. I know it still does 3-4 hour stints without trouble. There are 12" and 15" speaker versions for little extra money which may give you better bass, but I can only speak about the 10" one. I wanted something small and light and this does it.
Basically, I threw away all accessories (a very bad quality wireless mic and some headphones) and use it as a clean amp. Direct into the unit, the bass does the job. Add a little preamp pedal on batteries and you can get a much better sound.
In addition, I add a small 4 channel battery operated mixer, so I can put some vocals or something else through it (there are two inputs in the unit but it's a lot easier to balance the sound through the mixer).

There's noticeable hiss, but outdoors you can't hear it... what do you want for £120 or so? ;)

It's a cheap and versatile set up, and it gets louder than we need. However, we are not going for lots of loud and deep bass with this (I wouldn't try either, I am not sure the speakers in these units could take a lot of loud bass). The drummer controls himself a bit, but it's not quiet by any means, plus horns, guitars... it's a decent busking level, where enough people can be watching us, but without annoying the hell out of passers-by, if you know what I mean.

I struggled weighing out all the options before I bought this. I initially was going for a battery + inverter to use with my standard bass amplifier, but things got a combination of expensive, heavy, bulky and I felt I was risking investing several hundred dollars on something that would disappoint and would only get used maybe 10-12 times a year anyway... Someone talked to be about the QR10PA unit and I figured it was worth a try, as I could certainly find uses for it if it didn't do teh job. But it did. I prefer to use my Stingray with it because of the 3-band on board EQ, but I used it with a Precision a few times too and it was fine. Just not the best bass sound ever, but it was simple and I can walk with the whole thing (amp, bass, mixer, etc) and still have a hand free.

If you are looking for what I can only describe as 'loud busking' levels, this kind of unit might be a good option.

The system is plenty loud for situations like these (you can't see half of our band here, but I don't seem to have better pictures of better situations ;) and you get to see a bit the kind of area we're trying to cover with a decent volume)

I don't know why there aren't more small amps that accept DC power. There's nothing about an amplifier that necessitates AC power accept that they are built with AC power supplies. If you were electronically inclined, you could modify/customize an amplifier to bypass the AC power circuit and accept DC directly, after which it would just be a question of using the right batteries.

There's nothing intelligent about supplying only the current needed by the load (the amplifier is the load in this case). The load draws whatever current it needs, and either the power supply can supply it, or it can't (or it melts, if it is not protected from overload).
It's pretty clear from this post that you are NOT electronically inclined.

It's nowhere near as easy as this, yes it can be done (anything CAN be done if you have the experience and knowledge) but in general it's not at all easy (especially when dealing with efficiency, multiple power supply voltages AND EMC compliance).
 
In light of COVID-19, more musicians are performing outdoors out of necessity. More outdoor playing = more demand for battery powered amplifiers/PAs, etc. You have to figure that many manufacturer will start responding to that increased demand.

And not playing as loud anymore so people have to get close to have a conversation.
Out on the patio, bring your own power.
Class-D because the batteries last longer.
They should dump the "Watts" thing because it's acoustic power that matters.
I'll get a 4-Tuba power amp please ;)
 
It seems to me that using the included AC adapter is supported; using 8 AA batteries is supported; and other solutions besides those two (even if they work fine) are not supported. Am I wrong about that?
Page 9 has a clear illustration. It's called a "DC IN" jack, and is labeled 12-16V/4A and provides the correct pinout information: [pin 1 -, pin 4 +].
To quote the information on page 11: "*You can also connect the commercially available cable for an external power device." So yes, you can use a different external power source.

Interestingly, it looks like the Roland AC adapter is an accessory (not included) but they don't list the part number in the manual or call it out explicitly on their website. But here it is:

So, 8 AA batteries in series aren't going to supply much current at all while an external power source (AC adapter, 12 volt battery) will be able to provide more current over longer periods of time.

I think Roland claims the BA-330 will get you 6–12 hours of battery life assuming the AA batteries are fresh. If I get half that I’ll be happy, but AA batteries can get kind of expensive (although I suppose I could use rechargeables).

Bummer that it doesn’t come with the power supply.

So if I were using not the AA batteries, not the Roland power supply, and not an inverter, what would I be using?
 
I have a Briefcase Ultimate, but I haven't purchased batteries for it, and I haven't attempted to run it on DC power. I like it well enough, but subjectively speaking, it doesn't seem anywhere near as loud as a 160W amp should. That was fine for the acoustic jams I took it to. And you're right, it's a costly option.

Try disconnecting it from the internal speaker and driving an efficient external speaker. Then I think you will find it is much louder. Also I am not certain on this, but based on the literature I get the impression the original Briefcase is Class AB while the Ultimate is Class D. I have seen posts that say the original only lasts about an hour on battery at max volume, but Class D is supposed to be more efficient. So even though the Ultimate has more power it may last longer, especially if you disconnect the internal speaker and use it to drive an efficient cab.

8 x AA batteries max out a 4 WH per cell, so that's 32WH, not a lot of energy in practice.

The BA-330 is rated as two channels of 15W max. Pretty the RMS is considerably less. The reviews of the Roland amps say they last a good long time on battery power. Of course they are not super loud.

I believe the BA-330 is a bit louder than the Cube Street EX, although the Cube Street EX is rated for 25W x 2 max. The BA-330 (30lbs) has four 6.5" woofers and is about double the size and weight of the Cube Street EX (16lb). The Cube Street EX has a pair of 8" woofers.
 
Well, after all this discussion I found a used Roland BA-330 portable PA that runs on 8 AA batteries. My plan is to give it a try during my sparsely attended outdoor shows coming up (everyone masked and at social distance). The idea is to plug my vocal mic into one input and connect the Line Out of my Phil Jones Double Four BG-75 to another input via a passive DI box. The D4 has its own battery (Poweradd Pilot Pro2) set for 20 volts as I couldn’t determine for sure if it needed 19 or 20.

I just think for my needs this setup is more likely to be successful. I’ll get enough volume for my bass and have added bonus of reverb and feedback suppression. For the moment it beats messing with inverters and power stations and batteries and the like.

I’ll report back with the results and thanks for all the responses!

I would be interested in a direct comparison between the BA-330 and PJ Double Four.

Page 6 of the manual: 8 hours using alkalines, 10 hours using nickel-metal hydride (rechargable).

I'm having a hard time with these numbers. Roland states that the power consumption is 410mA. I don't believe for a moment that an 8-pack of AAs can deliver that current for that long.

For real long life, any one of these would do the trick.

A car battery would do, but isn't very friendly to carry.
