Double Bass Irene

I'm very relieved that we moved Gollihur Music from Ocean View NJ (a little over a mile from the bay near Sea Isle City, exit 17 of the GSParkway) 65 miles inland a few weeks ago. I'd have been plenty nervous about all the bass gear in that location.

Now I am only worried about my home. :hmm:

I hope all my many musician friends in Cape May County NJ and beyond stay safe. The evacuation orders were coincident with our travel to a family wedding in PA this weekend, so we're out of town.

She's getting close! The outer bands are hammering us now and it's bad- but worse weather is on the way! I'm far enough inland and enough above sea level that I should be okay, but I've got friends and family in some dodgy areas.

Time to batten down the hatches!

I'm most worried about friends in NYC- they're gonna get a beating!

I went through a number of these in Miami and most of them really just amounted to "bad weather", but occasionally a hurricane can be devastating. What I learned in Miami is that local news always puts someone on the beach clinging to a light pole like their about to blown out to see, when I can stand on my porch a mile away and realize it's not that bad. National news ignores most of the hurricanes that do or might hit the South East every year.

So, I've been hoping that that's what was going on with this one, you'd all get soggy and not much else, but I did hear that it's claimed 8 lives so far. Hoping that you're all okay, keep us posted.

I have been calling my Mom on Little Neck Bay in North East Queens since yesterday and no answer not even a connection or a fast busy. Finally I called the manager at Darryl Strawberry's Sports Grill in Douglaston Manor a mile away and had him go over to Moms. He called me on his cel phone when he located her. No power, no phone and no internet. He said my Dad had the barby going with steaks. He could smell them from Douglaston Parkway. Most of the trees are old swamp maples in Douglaston. They took a beating and the swamp overflowed up to Marinette Street.

Whew!! Glad all was well at the store ! I'd sure hate to lose that resource :)

Interestingly enough in my neck of Long Island some of the worst winds were on Sunday night well after Irene had passed.

I lost a couple of bricks in my chimney but that was it. No power loss, though much of the surrounding area lost power and there were a number of streets closed with downed power lines. Huntington Village, a couple of miles north of me, had some serious flooding, but nothing to speak of here.

LIRR isn't running so I'm working from home for the time being.
